Three CDE faculty honoured at University Awards

Three members of faculty from the NUS College of Design and Engineering (CDE) have been honoured for their contributions to education and research at the NUS University Awards.

The annual Awards ceremony, held on July 29 at the Shangri-La Hotel, recognises educators, researchers and professionals who are trailblazers in their fields and have made exceptional contributions to the University, Singapore and the global community.

The winners from CDE are:

University Research Recognition Award

Professor Liu Bin from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, CDE; NUS Senior Vice Provost (Faculty and Institutional Development); and Distinguished Professor.

A world-renowned researcher in the field of organic functional materials, Prof Liu is particularly known for her prolific work on polymer chemistry and applications of organic nanomaterials in medicine, environmental monitoring, and energy systems.

Young Researcher Award

Associate Professor John Ho from the Institute for Health Innovation & Technology (iHealthtech); and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (courtesy appointment with the Department of Biomedical Engineering), CDE.

A rising star in the field of bioelectronics, Assoc Prof Ho is internationally known for his work on wireless technologies for remotely monitoring and treating disease.

Outstanding Educator Award

Mr Donn Koh, Senior Lecturer from the Division of Industrial Design, CDE.

An exemplary leader in teaching innovation who has delivered authentic learning with the highest level of real-world results the faculty has ever seen, Mr Koh has achieved distinction in developing transformative mentoring relationships with students – often through technology in humanistic ways.

In addition, Mr Peter Ho, who served as Founding Chairman of the Advisory Board of the NUS Faculty of Engineering (a predecessor institution of the CDE) from 2017 to 2021, was presented with the prestigious Outstanding Service Award in recognition of his sustained contributions in selflessly serving the University and society.

Mr Ho’s current positions include Senior Advisor, Centre for Strategic Futures; Chairman, Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore; and member of the NUS Board of Trustees.

For 2022, eight individuals from across the NUS community were presented with awards.

Congratulating all the award winners, NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye said they had “flown the NUS flag high”.

“You have distinguished yourself in your respective fields,” Prof Tan said. “The NUS community is immensely proud of you and we are delighted to honour your accomplishments and contributions.”
