A Better Experience by Design
Having had difficulty when she applied to study at NUS three years ago, Karen Gan was inspired to redesign the NUS admission application form for an improved user interface/user experience, the so-called UI/UX. The project became a part of Karen’s internship with NUS Information Technology (NUSIT).
Together with her project partner, Chloe Chan, Karen used visual guides to provide a refreshing and intuitive interface. She helped make the application experience more welcoming by incorporating user-friendly features. Karen’s polytechnic background came in handy – the hands-on experiential learning she was used to helped her familiarise with the application of the designs in the NUSIT User Interface.

Digitalising Chemakers Physical Board Game
Throughout her 4-month stint, Karen was also involved in another project – Chemakers – a digitised version of a physical board game that facilitates the learning of organic chemistry. The challenge was in maximising the potential of the digital platform to elevate the gameplay and learning experiences for students. There are plans to develop the game as an app in the Apple and Samsung markets.
“Internships are great opportunities to discover and rediscover yourself, in terms of your strengths and weaknesses, what you like and dislike, what you could see yourself doing in the future and what you could not. I was able to pick up new skills and more importantly, to have a better understanding of my working style and how I interact with others. Internship is a good transition into the working life,” sums up Karen.
