Engineering Specialisations
Many of our programmes offer specialisations^, in which you will focus on a particular area within your chosen discipline. This usually involves reading a specified number of relevant technical electives, typically from semester 5 onwards, and you might also be required to complete a project in a related topic. You would receive a certificate of specialisation when you successfully complete all the requirements of the specialisation.
Specialisations are optional, only if you are passionate about one of these areas offered. You would not be disadvantaged should you choose not to specialise. Many of our top graduates do not specialise, yet build highly successful careers in various fields of engineering.
While you would apply to most of the specialisations only after Semester 4, the following specialisations also offer early admission at the time of application to selected disciplines in NUS Engineering:
- Aeronautical Engineering (Mechanical Engineering): learn advanced concepts of flight, structures, propulsion and control
- Digitalisation in Urban Infrastructure (Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering): learn how virtual systems and data analytics enhance safety and improve urban planning and design
- Internet of Things (Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering): learn how sensors and devices work and communicate with one another across wireless networks
- Robotics (Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering): learn how robots move and are controlled, and how they interact with their surroundings and humans
^See individual programmes for all other specialisations, which are available for application in later years.
