Assistant Professor Jin Yueming (Biomedical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering) has been recognised with First Prize in the Best Paper Award in the IJCARS-MICCAI 2021 Special Issue.
The awards recognise the highest quality papers in The Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society (MICCAI) Conference Special Issue, published in the International Journal for Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery (IJCARS).
The award this year recognised three papers, with Asst Prof Jin’s paper taking the top prize.
The paper, titled "Trans-SVNet: Hybrid Embedding Aggregation Transformer for Surgical Workflow Analysis", was a collaboration with Professor Pheng Ann Heng and Assistant Professor Qi Dou from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, along with Professor Danail Stoyanov from University College London.
The MICCAI Conference is a top-tier international gathering focused on medical imaging and intervention, while IJCARS is a leading journal in computer-assisted surgery.
Asst Prof Jin’s winning project is an artificial intelligence (AI) system that accurately identifies and predicts different stages of a surgical procedure. The system is a significant advance in computer-assisted interventions, providing support to surgeons and facilitating the development of intelligent robotic systems and automated surgeries.
“The project highlights the significance of AI in surgical data science and medical robotics, offering potential improvements to surgical safety and patient care,” Asst Prof Jin said.
The IJCARS-MICCAI Best Paper Award is granted based on the evaluation of reviewers and the decision of conference program chairs and journal editors.
