FACULTY AND STAFF UPDATES
Dr Idris Lim
Associate Professor, Engineering Design and Innovation Centre, Dean's Office
Before joining NUS, Dr Lim worked as an Associate Professor at the University of Glasgow, and prior to that she had worked at Vestas Technology R&D in wind energy. Her research interests are in renewable energy, smart nation, and biomedical device development. Her teaching philosophy focuses on active learning, ranging from problem-based learning to multidisciplinary collaborative learning, emphasising education for sustainable development. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Dr Janghee Cho
Assistant Professor, Division of Industrial Design
Dr Janghee Cho joined the Division of Industrial Design as a tenure-track Assistant Professor. Before joining NUS, he earned his PhD from the Department of Information Science at the University of Colorado Boulder in the US. His primary research fields are Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW). Dr Cho conducts design research and empirical studies to explore how technology can foster sustainable living in contemporary life. His research, published in top HCI venues like CHI and CSCW, has been supported by Meta.
Mr Tan Wee Beng
Deputy Director, Office of Research and Industry, Dean's Office
Wee Beng joined the Office of Research and Industry in CDE on secondment from the Office of Deputy President (Research & Technology). He is a graduate of NUS Engineering and is trained in Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering. Prior to joining NUS in 2016, he managed large-scale research programmes in A*STAR and Energy Market Authority (EMA) spanning domains such as biomedical sciences, sustainability and energy. He will work closely with the Office of Research and Innovation and CDE research community to develop programmes of strategic interest to CDE and NUS, as well as forging and deepening our partnerships with the industry.
Mrs Prema Sanjay Menon
Assistant Senior Manager, NUS Cities, Dean's Office
Prema joined the NUS Cities as an Assistant Senior Manager. She is an alumna of NUS Science. She assumes her role as NUS Cities's administrative manager, overseeing administrative, finance, procurement, IT, communications, and space management functions. Before taking on her current post, she was an Assistant Director at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), where her portfolio included collaboration with various government agencies to operationalise cross-border travel operations during the COVID-19 pandemic. She received the National Award (COVID-19 Resilience Medal) this year for her contributions to Singapore’s fight against COVID-19. Before joining MTI, Prema was in the education sector for 16 years, specialising in print and digital product development, and project and operations management.
Mr Goh Koon Yang
Senior Laboratory Executive, Department of the Built Environment
Koon Yang has joined the Department of Built Environment (DBE) to lead and manage all laboratory and workshop matters. He is also the departmental coordinator for safety and health matters at the CDE level. Before joining NUS, Koon Yang worked at the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Academy, overseeing construction skills and workplace safety and health training for the built environment sector.
Ms Jilliane Lee Jae En Executive (Public Relations), Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
With her educational background in Media Communication and experience in media/digital marketing, campaigns & events handling, Jilliane brings experience to support undergraduate publicity and outreach programmes.
Miss Teo Bee Hsia Jillian
Senior Executive, Engineering Design and Innovation Centre, Dean's Office
Jillian supports the MSc Engineering Design & Innovation programme. Prior to her current position, she worked as a Social Worker in counselling children and youths in the social service sector and serving the elderly in a hospital setting. In her free time, she enjoys sketching and gardening.
Mr Ong Xuan Jie Daryl
Executive, Engineering Scholars Programme, Dean's Office
Daryl holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics and Psychology from the University of Toronto. In his prior role, he was engaged in risk management at First National Financials. He will support the Engineering Scholars Programme administrative matters.
Ms Tracey Yao In Yan
Management Assistant Officer, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Tracey supports the ECE department in the Undergraduate Programmes. Before joining the department, she worked as an Admin Enforcement Officer in the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Tracey enjoys watching anime, playing computer games and listening to K-pop in her free time.
Ms Arissa Ardianty Binti Mohd Said
Management Assistant Officer, Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management
Before joining CDE, Arissa was an Assistant Team Leader at the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority, Singapore. She received her Diploma in Design for Interactivity (2017) from Republic Polytechnic, Singapore. She received REPUBLIC & FLAME awards from Republic Polytechnic for her exceptional leadership and exemplary character during her studies.
Ms Adeline Lim Li Ping
Senior Executive, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Adeline will support the department in secretarial, HR and other corporate administration matters. She brings with her years of relevant experience from the private sector.
Ms Nur Aryani Binte Ismail
Management Assistant Officer, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Before joining NUS, Nur Aryani worked in the industry with experience in customer service and administration. Her hobbies are reading, travelling, and cooking, and she previously committed herself to volunteering as an English tutor to a primary school student during her spare time.
Mr Ahmad Mustaqim Bin Abd Samad
Laboratory Technologist, Department of Mechanical Engineering
A recent graduate of Nanyang Technological University, Mustaqim holds a degree in Applied Physics. This marks his inaugural foray into the professional realm, and we welcome his enthusiasm and fresh perspectives. Mustaqim is keenly interested in 3D printing and other facets of digital fabrication, and it is anticipated his passion and academic background will contribute significantly to our ongoing projects and initiatives.
Promotions
Our congratulations to Professor Tong Yen Wah, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, on his promotion to full Professor with retrospective effect from 1 Jul 2023.
Management Updates
Associate Professor Xue Jun Min was appointed Acting Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering effective 1 October 2023.
Other Faculty Appointments
Professor Yong Kwet Yew (Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering) was re-appointed Chairman, Coastal Protection Expert Panel (CPEP) for another term of two+one years from 1 September 2023 by PUB, The National Water Agency. The CPEP is to serve an advisory role in providing expert knowledge, opinion and advice on the following areas: Coastal Master Plan, Coastal-Inland Flood Model, Technical Standards, Building coastal protection capabilities and expertise, and best practices on policy, planning and regulatory framework.
Professor Yong Kwet Yew was also re-appointed as Senior Fellow of the URA Academy for another three years from 1 November 2023 to 31 October 2026 by URA Chairman Mr. Peter Ho. URA is tapping on his rich experience in civil engineering and underground spaces in their urban planning work. Prof Yong has been advising URA on the underground master plan as well as the integration of land use and coastal protection due to sea-level rise.
Staff Announcements
All faculty and staff of CDE, including business partners, are entitled to take a day off on their birthday to celebrate with their loved ones. In case work requirements do not allow for this, you may take the day off on any day of your birthday month. Reporting officers should be informed of this unrecorded leave. This policy will come into effect from 1st January 2024. Even more reasons to celebrate your birthday in CDE!
Department Updates
The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department was honored with the Commendation Award for Safety & Health Management during the NUS Safety & Health 2023 Awards ceremony held on 23 October 2023. Hosted by the Office of Risk Management and Compliance, this accolade highlights the Department's dedication to safety through the gradual integration of DSHMS elements.
