Assoc Prof Shao Huilin recognised in Asia Women Tech Leaders Award

Associate Professor Shao Huilin was named in the inaugural list of the Asia Women Tech Leaders Award. The award recognises 50 accomplished women technologists working and based in Asia. It is focussed on inspiring women who make the tech happen; they are deep into the research and development of emerging and nascent technologies and tasked with managing and operationalising tech projects.

Dr Shao Huilin's work, blending advanced science and engineering, has significantly advanced personalised patient care. She developed key technologies, including molecular switches for detecting COVID-19 and a rapid blood test for early-stage Alzheimer's detection. These innovations have transformed clinical practices and methodologies. Huilin's research has received widespread recognition for its scientific, clinical, and commercial impacts.

Her work, which has been featured in respected scientific journals, has gained international media attention, including a live interview on BBC News. She holds a portfolio of over fifteen patents, with 6 licensed, and has founded a venture-backed technology spinoff. Her achievements are acknowledged by prestigious awards, such as the L’Oreal For Women in Science National Fellowship and the Singapore President’s Young Scientist Award, underlining her influence in biotechnology.

Assoc Prof Darren Chian appointed as President of GeoSS

Assoc Prof Chian Siau Chen Darren was appointed President of the Geotechnical Society of Singapore from 2024 to 2025. Established in 2008, the Geotechnical Society of Singapore (GeoSS) is a member society of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and the Association of Geotechnical Societies in Southeast Asia (AGSSEA).

He was also reappointed as Chair of the Technical Committee on Civil and Geotechnical Works, Enterprise Singapore - Institution of Engineers Singapore, for the term from 2024 to 2026.

Visiting Professor Radhakrishnan Nagarajan is the 2024 recipient of the David Richardson Medal

Visiting Professor Radha Nagarajan has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the David Richardson Medal. Established in 1966, the Richardson Medal recognises significant contributions to optical engineering, primarily in the commercial and industrial sectors. It honours David Richardson’s impact on applied optics.

Professor Nagarajan was honoured for the successful manufacturing and commercialisation of InP and Si-based photonic integrated circuits for use as optical interconnects with a wide range of applications. Recognised as an insightful engineer and outstanding innovator and mentor, his ability to move from concept to commercialisation and deployment was stated to continue to have a profound impact on the industry.

He received his BEng from the National University of Singapore, MEng from the University of Tokyo, Japan and PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA, all in Electrical Engineering. He is currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Optical Platforms at Marvell where he manages the development of the company’s optical platform technology and products. He joined Marvell from Inphi, where he was the Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Platforms, and prior to this, he was a Fellow at Infinera.

His other recognitions include the IEEE/LEOS Aron Kressel Award and the IPRM (Indium Phosphide and Related Materials) Award for his breakthrough work in the development and manufacturing of large-scale photonic integrated circuits. He was named to Electro Optics’ The Photonics100 2024, which honours the industry’s most innovative people. He has been awarded 245 US patents and is a Fellow of Optica, IEEE, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (UK).

The announcement was made by Optica (formerly OSA), Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide. Optica is a society dedicated to promoting the generation, application, archiving, and dissemination of knowledge in the field. Founded in 1916, it is the leading organisation for scientists, engineers, business professionals, students, and others interested in the science of light.
