EVENTS & OTHER HAPPENINGS

CDE Open Day 2025

"We invite you to start your journey with us here at CDE and hope the activities from today will give you the clarity in deciding your undergraduate programme. We are excited to welcome you to CDE in August," said Associate Professor James Kah, Vice Dean (Outreach).

CDE held its annual Open Day on 10 May 2025, where prospective students who have received offer letters were invited to learn more about their programmes and meet with faculty and students to hear about the experiences at CDE.

More than 700 prospective students and parents were in attendance as the 10 academic departments in CDE held talks, chaired roundtable discussions, and provided guided tours to aid them in making their decision.

Amongst the many staff and students who interacted with the visitors was Lo Yan (Year 4, Mechanical Engineering). He says, “I remember the same trepidation I had back when I was first deciding on my undergraduate programme. That’s why I wanted to be here and represent the Mechanical Engineering department so that I can give prospective students the confidence in making their decision.” Aside from speaking directly to students, Lo Yan gave a presentation on his journey as an undergraduate here in CDE.

Adjunct Assistant Professor Adrian Lai from the Department of Architecture was also present at Open Day, interacting with prospective Architecture students. Asst Prof Lai advises students to take advantage of the classes during the term break so that they can be better prepared when they start their undergraduate journey. “The Architecture programme is an adventure that is extremely rewarding. It’s the education of self, temperament, skill and character,” says Asst Prof Lai.

DOA hosts first-ever joint gradshow for four programmes

Landscape Architecture Gradshow 2025 visitor viewing

“The built environment today requires knowledge and collaboration across multiple disciplines. The projects you see in the exhibition today give us the opportunity to reflect on how much we learn from each other, and in turn, allow us to understand how we can work together to address the complex issues we face today," said Professor Jeffrey Hou, Head of the Department of Architecture.

The Department of Architecture recently held the opening night of the first-ever Joint Gradshow for the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA), Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), Master of Urban Planning (MUP) and Master of Arts in Urban Design (MAUD). Held at SDE1 and SDE3, the graduation exhibition features projects that study the intersection between urban development, nature, and human interaction.

Projects featured include:
Fresh Tropicality by Izwan Shah Ismail studies the urban morphology of Bugis and Kallang and how it has led to the erasure of ecological systems as well as reshaping social and cultural interaction in the area.

Heart of Gold by Mariam Yusuf Rajkotwala - Sulemanji proposes a design for Queenstown in Singapore that aims to restore the area through community identity, closed-loop water systems and inclusive public spaces.

The Last Cat Island by Xu Xuezhu is an insightful study into how the “Cat Island” of Tashirojima’s growth as a popular tourist destination has relegated the cats to become merely symbols of consumption. Xuezhu analyses whether design could act as a catalyst for ecological recovery, allowing for humans and cats to coexist.

BME FYP Showcase 2025

“Congratulations to everyone on the work well done. This is a culmination of all the exciting work that you’ve put in over the past year. None of this would be possible without the community that has been built here, including students, faculty, researchers and collaborators from the industry," said Professor Dean Ho, Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (BME).

The BME FYP Showcase 2025 saw over 100 projects from final-year undergraduates exhibited at the E7 Atrium on 14 May 2025. These projects covered topics such as technology for the elderly, solutions to aid physiotherapy and recovery, training tools for health and medical workers, and many more.

In attendance was the Singapore Civil Defence Force’s Deputy Commissioner (Strategy and Corporate Services), DC Teong How Hwa, who was present to view a collaborative project between BME and SCDF.

Under the supervision of Assoc Prof Bina Rai and officers from SCDF's Emergency Psychological Sciences Department and Responder Performance Centre at the Civil Defence Academy, Year 4 undergraduate Thura Soe developed a virtual simulation comprising a high-rise firefighting and rescue scenario. Through the project, a virtual self-guided simulated scenario was created and validated to facilitate the training and assessment of firefighters’ tactical decision-making and situational awareness. This project also built upon the foundational work of a previous BME FYP student, Verlyn Ku, who had initiated the development of the scenario-based simulation design.

“Working with SCDF was truly a rewarding and eye-opening experience. They were very active in offering feedback and suggestions, and it allowed me to create a solution that was viable and useful for firefighters,” said Thura.

Commenting on the collaboration between SCDF and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, DC Teong said, “I am proud of the continued partnership between SCDF and BME. This partnership allows us to develop tools and aids for our officers that are not only practical but also backed by science.”

Assoc Prof Bina Rai notes that this is the third such collaboration between BME and SCDF.

Congratulations to the BME Class of 2025!
