CDE Asst Profs named on MIT young innovators list

Asst Prof Zhang Yamin (Presidential Young Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) and Asst Prof Irmandy Wicaksono (Presidential Young Professor, Division of Industrial Design) have been named on the MIT Technology Review’s 2025 Innovators Under 35 (TR35) list.

The prestigious list recognises outstanding young innovators whose work promises to shape the coming decades and spans fields including biotechnology, materials, computer hardware, energy, transportation and communications.

Asst Prof Zhang Yamin’s recognition spotlights her recent work on a tiny, wireless and biodegradable pacemaker that dissolves harmlessly in the body after use. Her invention offers a safer alternative to conventional devices that require risky removal surgery, and could also open new possibilities in pain management, wound healing and tissue regeneration. Asst Prof Irmandy Wicaksono is recognised for developing health-sensing fabrics that can monitor vital signs and movements in real time. Durable, washable and comfortable to wear, his textiles could transform healthcare by enabling unobtrusive patient monitoring at home, while also powering applications from sports performance tracking to next-generation space suits.
