General Information

General Information

You may want to refer to the information provided here for more details on planning for SEP (on minimum workload requirement and study plan).

Cambridge Academic Calendar & Curriculum

The Cambridge academic year commences in October and finishes in June each year. The academic calendar consists of three terms (Michaelmas, Lent and Easter) and exams for Part II modules begin on the Monday of week 0 in the Easter term and end not later than the Wednesday of week 2.

Outgoing exchange students will be doing the Part IIA course while in Cambridge. You must choose ten modules, five in the Michaelmas term and five in the Lent term. During the second half of the Easter term, all Part IIA students will need to undertake 2 projects.

Do take note that you can only take modules from the Engineering Department and no others.

Oxford Academic Calendar & Curriculum

The Oxford academic year commences in October and finishes in June each year. The academic calendar consists of three terms (Michaelmas, Hilary and Trinity).

You can only take courses offered by the Engineering Science Department and not from other Oxford departments. It is expected that B-papers (third year courses) and C-papers (fourth year courses) will make up the majority of the courses to be taken by NUS students. The normal workload of an exchange student at Oxford is a total of 6 Examination Units (EUs) as written papers plus a project with a weighting of 6 EUs (project list - pending update). You are expected to take no more than four B- and C-papers plus one A-paper or six B- and/or C-papers. Each A-paper (second year course) is twice the weight of a B- or C-paper, i.e. 2 EUs. One thing to note, taking of A-papers are subject to the necessary agreement from the tutors at the colleges involved in the exchange.

Find out more information on the courses in Course Structure and Handbooks for First, Second, Third and Fourth Years.

(Note: Please use the above list as a guide only, as the course curriculum is subject to changes from time to time.)

Accommodation

You will be staying in one of the Cambridge/Oxford Colleges and will be taking over one of the spots vacated by the Cambridge/Oxford students who are coming to NUS. Thus, the College you will be assigned to will depend on which College the Cambridge/Oxford student is from.

Financial Aid

For outgoing exchange students who need financial assistance to participate in overseas programmes, there are NUS and external awards/scholarships and loan options available for application. Students who are existing scholarship recipients may check with your scholarship sponsor if your scholarship includes support or provision for SEP.

For Singaporean students selected to go on the NUS-Oxbridge Undergraduate Exchange Programme, you will be provided with some financial support from the LBC Family Engineering Exchange Scholarship.  The Scholarship was established in 2012 by Mr Loh Boon Chye, an NUS Engineering alumnus who graduated in 1989, and is used to help engineering undergraduate students out financially while they are on overseas exchange (covering air travel, accommodation, and general living expenses).

Visa

Outgoing exchange students will need a Tier 4 (General) student visa to study in the UK. Application for the visa can only be done after you have been accepted by University of Cambridge/University of Oxford, and a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) reference number sent to you.

Eligibility

An invitation will be sent out in January/February each year to selected students to apply for the NUS-Oxbridge Undergraduate Exchange Programme. Suitable candidates will be shortlisted for an interview with a panel of interviewers from CDE Dean's Office.
