Alumni Award Winners 2019
The NUS Engineering Alumni Award winners are celebrated every year at the annual Alumni Gala Dinner and in 2019, it was held on 8 November at the Kent Ridge Guild House. Guests at the event commemorated the achievements of our esteemed alumni together with the new Dean of NUS Engineering, Professor Aaron Thean. The Dean also highlighted during the event the importance of the alumni network and acknowledged the financial and nonfinancial contributions of various alumni which will go a long way in helping maximise the learning experience for current students.
Award Recipients
The accomplishments of five alumni were recognised and presented the Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (DEAA), Engineering Alumni Service Honours (EASH) and Outstanding Engineering Young Alumni Award (OEYAA) accordingly.

Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (DEAA)
Ms Aw Kah Peng, Chairman of Shell Companies in Singapore graduated with a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from NUS in 1990. Ms Aw was the General Manager for Intermediates Chemicals Asia Pacific and Middle East before her current role in January 2019. She spent many years in the Singapore public service and her contributions to the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Singapore Tourism Board (STB) involved promoting and developing investments in Singapore’s growing oil and Chemicals industry as well as leading the development of the two integrated resorts (Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa), The Formula 1 night race, the launch of the development of the Marina Cruise Centre and the Singapore International Culinary Experience.
Er Tan Seng Chuan, is the Chairman and Managing Director of TEMBUSU Asia Consulting Pte Ltd. Er Tan graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) from NUS in 1983. He has led a number of successful projects in the Asia Pacific region, including representative projects for Jurong Island Air Quality Study, Deep Tunnel Sewerage System, Changi Water Reclamation Plant, Tembusu Waste Water Treatment Plant at Jurong Island, Changi MRT Depot, US Air Force Center of Environmental Excellence Program, and other Industrial Program Developments in the region. Er Tan was conferred an Honorary Fellowship by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore in 2015, the Institution of Engineers, Australia in 2016, and ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisation in 2009.

Engineering Alumni Service Honours (EASH)
Mr Alan Heng Chee Ooi, Chief Executive Officer of Gas Supply Pte Ltd (GSPL) and Executive Vice President of Pavilion Energy Pte Ltd, holds a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Hons) and an MBA from NUS. Prior to 2011, Mr Heng was with ExxonMobil Corporation for 23 years. His previous roles included ExxonMobil Regional Executive – Oceania, Chairman & Managing Director – Mobil Oil New Zealand, Chairman – Mobil Oil New Guinea and Country Manager – Taiwan. He was a director on the board of NZX listed, New Zealand Refining Company from 2000-2004.
Mr Hoong Yik Luen, Co-Founder of New Silk Road Investment graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree from NUS in 1990. Mr Hoong’s investment career took off after obtaining the qualification of Chartered Financial Analyst while working in the financial sector. He moved to Hong Kong and then Shanghai to work and was involved in private and public market equity research and investment with various international firms. When he left his job as the Head of Hong Kong/China Equity of Deutsche Bank in 2008, he headed home to Singapore and co-founded New Silk Road Investment, an alternative investment firm helping institutional investors around the world to invest in Asian public equities. Currently, Mr Hoong runs the China portfolio.

Outstanding Engineering Young Alumni Award (OEYAA)
Mr Lim Chong Tee, Chief Marketing Officer of WateRoam graduated with an honours degree in Environmental Engineering from NUS in 2016. Mr Lim co-founded WateROAM, a social enterprise that develops portable and affordable water filtration systems to help affected communities in disaster-hit sites and rural developments obtain safe drinking water. He has since been able to improve the lives of more than 83,500 people through the patented filtration technology developed by WateROAM. Mr Lim has won many impressive awards including the Facebook Social Entrepreneurship Award, Asia Pacific Regional Winner 2017, PUB Hydropreneur Programme 2016, Most Investment Worthy Award, Singapore International Foundation, Young Social Entrepreneur 2015, Winner and many more.
