People + places: Exploring the living heritage of Songkhla old town, edited by Johannes Widodo, Nikhil Joshi, et al. The ‘living’ heritage is closely associated with a community. To manage this dynamic heritage, it is not only necessary to look beyond the established heritage frameworks developed by experts, but also to empower communities so that they can maintain and even enhance their ‘own’ heritage. The innovative process of community mapping is one such way that makes peoples’ culture more apparent for it to be maintained and even further developed. The living heritage maintains the continuity of community connections; hence, it should continue to evolve in the form of tangible and intangible cultural expressions of a community to remain meaningful for the present and future generations. “People + places” is a fully illustrated book that offers participatory ways in the form of community mapping for exploring the relationship between the people and places of the Songkhla Old Town. This book analyses and summarises the social, cultural and economic assets directly related to of the old town as identified with the assistance of the locals. “People + places” also contains a detailed metric survey of two historic buildings in Songkhla old town – Railway station and a historic shophouse to raise public awareness and appreciation of Songkhla’s rich and varied built heritage.
“People + places” is an essential book for community architects and architects, city planners, urban designers, heritage groups, and anyone else concerned with public engagement in cultural heritage management.
