Programme Overview

The Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) is a four-year Honours degree programme that prepares students to respond to multifaceted socio-ecological issues in Asia through critical thinking, analytical inquiry, and creative expression. The BLA provides core foundation training in skills and knowledge that equips our graduates for professional practice or entry into advanced master’s degree programmes at NUS and internationally. Relevant topics, including tropicality, site specificity, boundaries and scales, densification, multifunctionality, and placemaking are played out in the programme through integrated learning in design studios and lecture courses. The BLA is taught in unique education settings that concurrently promotes speculation while being grounded and action-oriented design outcomes relevant to real life issues.

In the first year, students are introduced to foundational knowledge in landscape architecture, history and theory, and essential representation techniques. Studio courses specifically focus on core design methodologies: ways of sensing, reading, understanding, and interpreting fundamental landscape elements in forms, structures, materiality, and functions.

In the second and third years, students acquire skills in design representation, site analysis, specialized software, and spatial analytical tools. Students begin to synthesize landscape forms, structures, processes and functions with more specialized knowledge in planting design, landscape engineering, and advanced water sensitive urban design principles.

The fourth year is open and flexible with multiple options and combinations possible. Those who wish to become landscape architects are offered a choice of two specialisations, one in Landscape Studies and another in Landscape Practice. Both of which further enrich and deepen a student’s knowledge in field, preparing them to enter the workforce.

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture, graduates are eligible to apply for the MLA programme at NUS with direct admission into the second year if they fulfil the necessary criteria for advanced placement credits. Those who chose one of the two specialisations and acquired the necessary professional experience are eligible for professional accreditation as Landscape Architects through the Landscape Architects Accreditation Programme of the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA).
