ARCHITECTURE STUDENT WON ASIA YOUNG DESIGNER AWARDS 2019/2020

The Asia Young Designer Award (AYDA) is an annual regional awards programme that recognises and nurtures young talent in the fields of architecture and interior design. This year’s theme “Forward – A Sustainable Future” asked for designs immersed with environmental and social sustainability elements. AYDA was first launched in 2008 by Nippon Paint. This event serves as a platform to inspire architecture and interior design students to develop their skills through cross-learning opportunities and networking with key industry players as well as fellow design peers in the region. NUS Architecture student, Mahmud Kamil Bin Abdul Kadir, won Silver Asia Young Designer Award AYDA 2019/2020 (2nd place), Architecture Category, in a competition organised by Nippon Paint and a cash prize of S$1000. His design proposal entitled BLACK MARKET was done in AY2018/19 Sem1, AR3101 DESIGN 5, and mentored by Assistant Professor Dr Zdravko Trivic. This was the second time NUS Architecture students took part in this competition.

BLACK MARKET: Black Market is a proposed market place within Jalan Besar – along the empty field, which once housed the former Sungei Road Thieves Market. The name of the project was to reflect on the roots of the Sungei Road market where merchants used to sell stolen items at the venue. By proposing the idea of a second-hand market place at the former venue, the design not only tackles the issue of the buy-and-throw-away culture that has been inculcated into Singaporeans, but also triggers dialogue and social integration between all Singaporean locals regardless of social classes.
