OVERVIEW

NUS Architecture is renewing and rebuilding our school. In 2018, we began a full revamp of NUS Architecture’s existing studios and facilities. A new Net-Zero Energy building (SDE 4) has been completed in 2019. New studio spaces will exist as large, light-filled and partially-naturally ventilated common areas configurable to student needs. The new six-storey building incorporates a large overhanging roof, which together with its east and west facades, shade it from the sun’s heat and provide a cooler interior. The design harnesses solar energy, and employs hybrid cooling to deliver a better quality of comfort, and to adapt to Singapore’s tropical climate. The result is an architecture that offers a deeply biophilic experience connecting NUS Architecture’s faculty and students to the campus’ natural surroundings.

NET-ZERO ENERGY BUILDING — SDE 4

Conceptualised by the NUS School of Design and Environment, the NZEB@SDE is designed to be climate-responsive with net-zero energy consumption. The six-storey building will feature a range of green building designs, such as harnessing solar energy, hybrid cooling approach, natural ventilation and lighting.

The Department of Architecture is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation of its existing facilities to be completed in 2020.The design, conceived over three years of research and iteration with direct involvement of the Department of Architecture faculty, is a direct outcome of the ethos and intelligence at the the Department, setting the stage for the future of architectural education at NUS.

INFORMATION RESOURCE CENTRE

The Information Resource Center is a collection of various volumes and books that cover a wide spectrum of information relating to the study of architecture. A wealthy source of information for students to do research, the IRC houses historical notes on various buildings in Singapore, as well as past year thesis papers and hard-to-find materials that are on long-term loan from the Central Library. The IRC is temporarily closed until December 2018, and will resume operations at NZEB@SDE in 2019.

DESIGN FABRICATION WORKSHOP

The Design Fabrication Workshop is equipped with various machinery to aid students in fabricating models and items required for exploration and submissions. These include CNC machines, 3D printers, laser engravers, vacuum formers that are able to work with a variety of materials for students to familiarise and understand how to prototype.
