As the only transport hub in Whampoa, St. Michael’s Terminal serves mid to long range bus services, as well as feeder services that serve the residents in Whampoa estate. Through our group’s observations of user activity and behaviour in the terminal, we studied the relative paths and journey of each user; their respective interactions with the various touch-points within the terminal were studied, through the method of empathy mapping as well.
We concluded that the terminal has been frequently used as a gathering location, whether it is for people who are working there or otherwise. However, the notion of gathering has been largely discouraged due to the fear of COVID transmission that comes with social interactions. Our project aimed to look at ways to still promote this sense of gathering and let them continue their way of life in the terminal without compromising the safety and health of the people.
The 3-pronged approach that our group proposed varies from macro to micro scales within a combined system: rapid deployment of colour coded social distancing stickers throughout the terminal, implementation of proper gathering spaces to enhance safe takeaway culture and the redesign of lounge furniture for proper rest.
