Fragments of a New Housing Language, Symposium and Exhibition

It is our pleasure to inform you about the Fragments of a New Housing Language, Symposium and Exhibition to be held in Singapore at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on 22 February 2016, from 22nd February – 6th March 2016.

Sponsored by The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism in Korea and the Arts Council of Korea, this international symposium and exhibition is a continuation of a cross-cultural dialogue introducing the innovative work of Korean architects to a global audience. First launched in 2007 as the ‘Global Cities Network,’ a symposium and exhibit that started in Germany before traveling to a host of urban centers in Japan, China, France and beyond, ‘Fragments of a New Housing Language,’ takes a more in depth look into the emerging innovations in Korean housing.

Curated by internationally renowned architect and professor Moongyu Choi, the event will elucidate the work of 6 emerging Korean architecture firms, all of which have won the highly competitive ‘Young Architects Prize,’ bestowed by the Korean Institute of Architects. Rather than merely display their work however, the lectures will focus on how the basic elements of housing are specifically given new vitality through innovative transformation that however work within strict economic and regulatory constraints.

Following the keynote speakers, the exhibition opening will be conducted as a ‘live Q&A’ session with all the 14 participating architects and designers present. Through large scale photographs, drawings, models, texts, and background urban analyses, we hope to continue the lively discussion with fellow participants, the faculty of the National University of Singapore, local housing and urbanism experts, professionals, and local and international audiences that have been invited to the event.

Our keynote speakers include:

John Hong, Architect / Professor, Seoul National University
John Hong received a Master’s in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor’s in Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia. He has served as Associate Professor in Practice at the Harvard GSD, and has held visiting professorships at other major universities including the University of Pennsylvania. His work has been exhibited at international venues including the 2014 Venice Biennale as well as published in major media such as Architectural Record, Metropolis Magazine, Dwell Magazine, The New Yorker, and Space Magazine. His built projects have garnered many prestigious awards including fifteen American Institute of Architecture (AIA) awards, Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard, the Emerging Voices Award from the Architectural League NY, a Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction Award, and the Metropolis Next Generation Prize to name a few. His writing on contemporary architectural culture has been published widely including in the book Convergent Flux: Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism in Korea, (Birkhauser).

Lee Jinoh, architect / principal, SAAI
Lee Jinoh received his Bachelor’s in Architecture at Hongik University. He worked at  D.P.J & Partners and studied architecture at Korea National University of Arts. He taught architecture at Konkuk, Hongik, and Yonsei Universities. He gained experience as a consultant of Life Culture Center and Culture Design Project of the Korean government. As a partner of SAAI, with works such as ‘Yanggu Porcelain Research Facility’, ‘Icheon SKMS Research Facility’, and ‘Bongcheon-dong House of a Musician’, he explores the formation of relationships through the aggregation of individual spaces. In the exhibition ‘Co-Living Scenarios’ in the Seoul Museum of Art, he proposed new typologies of housing and family. Currently he resides in ‘Ejjeoda Jip@Yeonnam’, one of his projects.

Siew Man Kok, architect/ founding director of MKPL Architects Pte Ltd
Siew Man Kok graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) degree in 1989. In March 1995, he set up MKPL Architects with his partner, Cheng Pai Ling.
They saw interpreting the local vernacular with technology in a contemporary context, in pursuit of an Architecture that will speak of its locale, climate & culture.  Starting with small dwellings, successful and innovative designs have enabled MKPL’s body of works to expand to include projects ranging in scale and type from high-rise residential towers, university buildings, master planning and public housing. The firm’s work has won numerous local and international awards and is continuing to diversify, tackling seminal contemporary concerns such as public housing planning and design, sustainable living environments, innovative educational spaces, adaptive reuse of the heritage buildings such as the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and preservation and rejuvenation of the Rail Corridor.
Most recently, Man Kok was honored the President’s Design Award for the past two consecutive years: in 2014 Kent Vale Faculty Housing received the Design of the Year, and in 2015 he received the prestigious Designer of the Year accolade for his outstanding contribution to design and culture in Singapore.
