Demolition and Reconstruction: Balancing Growth and Building with Nature
Over the past two decades of Anton’s experience in urban redevelopment, he has witnessed a concerning policy that is consistent: the systematic demolition inherent in spatial planning, influencing both urban and rural landscapes. Observations across Singapore and Indonesia urban development indicate a prioritization of urbanization, economic growth, and capital gains at the expense of conserving existing structures, forests, and agricultural lands. This deliberate policy seems fuelled by the interplay of urban growth and capital interest present challenges, such as displacement of existing communities, local biodiversity, and resource depletion.
The lecture delves into retrospective insights derived from Anton’s extensive project involvement over the 20 years, offering analysis of both negative and positive outcomes. It questions the sustainability of current practices and their implications for the future.
Amidst these challenges, professions such as urban planning, landscape architecture, and architecture retain profound significance. The forward-thinking plans demand a shift toward building harmoniously with nature and for people.
Can the prevailing pattern of destruction be transformed into a future that honours both environment and urban growth? Approaching these challenges with sensitivity and resiliency is key to nurturing a regenerative future.
