Congratulations to Soh Jie Hui Adrian, a third-year architecture student, who has won the 11th Asian Contest of Architectural Rookie’s Award (ACARA). This is an international contest for architectural students in Asia. The competition is organised by the Asia United Architectural Association (AUA) and hosted virtually by the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand, in November 2022. Submissions came from: Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Laos, Myanmar, Nepal, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. The award consists of cash prize of USD1,000 and a year subscription to CASABELLA architectural magazine.

The theme of this year’s competition was “Architecture after COVID-19”. The theme challenged students to create creative designs on how to deal with change posed by pandemic conditions, while engaging with the concepts such as concentration and decentralisation, liberation and closure.

Adrian’s project, titled “Intertwine @ Duxton Plain Park”, and mentored by Lee Tat Haur under AR3101 Design 5 AY2022/23, reinterprets the market and hawker centre in Singapore’s Tanjong Pagar area. The project focuses on seamless integration with the green corridor, and new means of commercial exchange, food delivery, community interaction and active living. Through improved continuity, accessibility and engagement, the market serves as a future pitstop for diverse communities from all walks of life to intertwine.

Congratulations also to another third-year student, Caleb Lew, whose project titled “Let it Grow”, mentored by Associate Professor Dr Zdravko Trivic, finishing in top 5. The project re-imagined the podium block in Tanjong Pagar focusing on informal, customisable and kampong-like bottom-up growth with the active role of local community.
