DEP5102 Urban Planning History and Theory
Urban Planning History and Theory is a core course that provides students with a thorough understanding of the theories related to cities and planning process, and their historical contexts, both local and global. The first half of this course covers the evolution of the cities and urban planning in the following aspects: urbanization and growth, environmental planning, economic development, and gentrification. In this part, students will also learn theories related to city development, such as informality, sustainability, and gentrification and their limitations to understand urban development and planning policies. The second part will cover the main planning alternatives from a theoretical perspective for the following planning modes: strategic planning, equity and advocacy planning, collaborative planning, communicative planning, and critical theories.
