Dr Chen is an urban historian, architect, and column writer. She obtained her M.Eng in Architecture at Tianjin University, followed by her PhD at the National University of Singapore. Her research interests center around urban history of treaty ports in China, overseas Chinese architecture and settlement, urban and rural regeneration in Asia. She is one of the leading scholars in the studies of Gulangyu and oversea Chinese architecture. She was awarded several research grants from Singapore, Japan, China, etc. She was the recipient of 2008 JAABE Best Paper Award. Qualified as Class 1 registered architect in China, she designed and managed several urban and architectural projects in Asia. While leading urban and architectural design studio, she teaches urban lecture modules and organizes overseas fieldtrips and workshops. She also offers two electives, including "Urban and Rural Regeneration in Asia" and "Overseas Chinese Architecture and Settlement".
