Assistant Professor Dr Charles Lim (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) is taking a two-year leave from NUS to lead a team at JPMorgan developing next-generation quantum communication network technologies for financial systems.
In his new role, Dr Lim will be the investment bank's global head for quantum communications and cryptography.
In a memo cited by CNBC announcing the appointment, Marco Pistoia, head of JPMorgan's global technology applied research group, said Dr Lim would "pursue both foundational and applied research in quantum information, focusing on innovative digital solutions that will enhance the security, efficiency, and robustness of financial and banking services."
Dr Lim, who has a PhD from the University of Geneva in Quantum Cryptography and Information Theory, is a recognised global expert in next-generation quantum-resistant communication networks.
Quantum supremacy
Whilst quantum computing is thought to be several years away from commercial use, the technology promises to one day be able to solve problems far beyond the reach of today's traditional computers.
One critical implication of this development - known as "quantum supremacy" - would be that the vital encryption techniques that maintain the security of global communications and financial networks are immediately compromised.
To meet this challenge, there is increasingly intense interest in developing new forms of cryptography and secure messaging.
Professor Aaron Thean, Dean of the College of Design and Engineering, said Dr Lim had built a strong quantum engineering research team at NUS, adding "we are truly supportive of his opportunity to make a difference for the industry and field of quantum engineering."
"Although we will miss him for the next two years, we are proud of his recognition, and we look forward to maintaining close connections with him while he is with JPMorgan."
