Enhancing Offshore System Productivity, Integrity and Survivability in Extreme Environments (ENSURE)

The ENSURE project ($4.1 million) is an Industry Alignment Fund – Pre-Positioning Programmes funded through A*STAR to NUS to develop next generation Marine & Offshore (M&O) Engineering solutions that can enable remote monitoring, provide predictability and support decision management.

The project runs from 1 Mar 2020 – 31 Aug 2023.

It is a multi-agency project led by Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS) and NUS/CORE is one of the key collaborating partners.

The project aims to develop the following:

  • Sensor-interfaced digital twin incorporating space resolved wave forcing to facilitate structural health assessment.
  • Data-driven response model to identify the critical substructure or local component as well assess the status of asset and associated risks to operations
  • Deep learning data analytics and pattern recognition for substructure identification and asset health assessment

The impact of ENSURE outcomes is directly relevant to the M&O industry through the following:

(a) Productivity: An increase in the operating envelop of offshore assets through smart sensing, improved modelling and knowledge of the behavior and response of the operating systems in a complex operating environment, would result in higher productivity and safer operations.

(b) Structural Integrity: An asset management system supports data infrastructure assurance with smart sensing for structural health monitoring, including alternative methods of survey that would facilitate predictive maintenance, enable detection of structural degradation, inform on the lifecycle needs of the asset, reduce intrusive surveys and duration, and transform towards self-certification of the operating assets.

(c) Survivability in Extreme Environments: With climate change and current trending towards increased storm intensity, improving the understanding by setting risk based requirements and predictability on survivability of the structures would help ensure the safety and well-being of the crew onboard, strengthen decision supports systems in support of de-manning and improve on the reliability of fatigue life estimation.

This project involves collaborations with Singapore based M&O industry partners and work closely with them on their specific offshore rig/platform designs to co-create knowledge and co-innovate solutions needed to enhance Operational Excellence in terms of Productivity, Asset Health Management in terms of Integrity and Survivability of their marine and offshore Assets.

In addition, this project helps build capabilities to pivot to new areas that enable Singapore’s M&O industry players remain globally competitive and capture emerging market opportunities, specifically in smart systems and operations in LNG and Offshore renewables sectors. More importantly, it would help Singapore remain a premier centre of choice for customized solutions, quality products, value added and reliable services in the global M&O market.
