The Yongnam Medal and Prize is awarded to a graduating or recently graduated student with a PhD in Civil Engineering for his/her excellent PhD research in the field of civil engineering and whose research has the potential to yield impact to national development, economy and/or the society.

The Department received 8 excellent nominations under the Lee Seng Lip Medal and Prize for the best recent PhD graduates in either Civil or Environmental Engineering.  The award goes to Dr Lai Binglin.  The best amongst the remaining 5 contested PhD graduates in Civil Engineering, Dr Cao Wenjun, is awarded the Yongnam Medal and Prize.

The factors considered are the quality and quantity of publications (journal, conference, book and/or book chapter, FWCI, keynotes), impact of PhD research (citations and/or translational indicators), placement, and overall quality of candidate (CV).

Dr Lai Binglin’s research is on high performance structural materials and sustainable development of tall buildings.  He has strong experimental, computational and analytical skills.  He has published 15 journal and 7 conference papers.  He is the co-author of a design guide “BC4: 2021-Design Guide for Steel-Concrete Composite Columns with High Strength Materials-An Extension of Eurocode 4 Method to C90/105 Concrete and S550 Steel” and co-author of a book published by Elsevier “Design of Steel-Concrete Composite Structures Using High Strength Materials” in 2021.  He was guest speaker at two symposia.  Based on Google-scholar, he has a H-index of 9 and 207 citations.  He won the Gold Award for the 2020 ACI SC annual project competition (open category).  He is currently an Assistant Professor at Southeast University at Nanjing, China.
