Q1 WHAT ARE THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS?
For students with Singapore Cambridge GCE ‘A’ Level qualification, the pre-requisites are
H2 Mathematics and
H2 Physics* or H2 Chemistry
* Students without H1 or H2 Physics need to have an ‘O’ Level pass in Physics or its equivalent and will be required to take Physics bridging courses.
For students with IB Diploma, the pre-requisites are
HL Mathematics and
HL Physics** or HL Chemistry
** Students without HL Physics will be required to take Physics bridging courses.
For students with NUS High School Diploma, the pre-requisites are
Good Major CAP in
Mathematics and
Physics*** or HL Chemistry
*** Students without Major subject in Physics need to have an ‘O’ Level pass in Physics or its equivalent and will be required to take Physics bridging courses.
For students with Diploma from Polytechnic, you should have a relevant and accredited diploma. Refer to accredited diploma list.
Q2 HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE COURSES?
Selection of applicants for undergraduate courses will be based on academic merit. Due to keen competition for limited vacancies, the choice order of courses will also determine the selection outcome. Hence, applicants are advised to list out their course choices in their order of preference.
Applicants will be considered for admission based on the strength of their academic achievements using the University Admission Score (UAS) and additional interviews/tests if required. The UAS is computed as follows:
- the best four content subjects (i.e. 3 H2 and 1 H1 content subjects, with at least 1 content subject to be from a contrasting discipline)
- either GP or KI grade taken in the same sitting
- H1 Project Work
The maximum points for H2 and H1 subjects are 20 and 10 respectively. Therefore, the total maximum possible is 90. For more details, please refer to the information provided by the Office of Admission
Q3 WHAT IS THE INDICATIVE GRADE POINT (IGP) FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING?
The indicative grade point (IGP) fluctuates every year and it depends on the size of the cohort. The IGP for the 10th percentile for ‘A’ level applicants are BBC/C and CCD/B in 2018 and 2019 respectively while the corresponding IGP for polytechnic applicants are 3.65 and 3.71 respectively. The lowering of the IGP in 2019 for the ‘A’ level applicants was due to an increase in cohort size to meet the high demand for civil engineers in the industry.
More details on the IGP can be found in the Office of Admission – Undergraduate Programmes website.
Q4 I AM A POLYTECHINC APPLICANT. DO I GET ADMITTED DIRECTLY INTO THE SECOND YEAR OF NUS ENGINEERING?
Our curriculum is based on a unit system which provides flexibility by allowing students of different interests and abilities to study at a pace that suits them. Polytechnic graduates with the relevant diplomas can receive unit exemptions amounting to about one year of study and complete their studies in three years or sooner depending on careful academic planning.
More information can be found in Q1 of FAQ – Curriculum and Educational Experience
Q5 ARE POLYTECHNIC APPLICANTS ABLE TO COPE WELL WITH THE CURRICULUM?
We admit about 30 polytechnic applicants from the various polytechnics every year. Polytechnic applicants have the advantage due to prior knowledge in several modules owing to their training at the polytechnics (e.g. design modules). In addition, polytechnic applicants are often granted course exemptions that is equivalent to one year of study. Many of the polytechnic applicants excelled in their studies and graduated with the highest classes of Honours.
Q6 IS CIVIL ENGINEERING SUITABLE FOR LADIES?
Nowadays many civil engineering jobs are carried out in office. Many civil engineers make use of software systems for analysis, design, planning and management. Ladies form a sizeable group in civil engineering work force. Currently about 30-40% of our civil engineering undergraduate students are ladies.
Below are examples of how the ladies are soaring to new heights in civil engineering:

Q2 WHAT ARE THE FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE FOR CIVIL ENGINEERING STUDENTS?
The University is committed to providing a quality education for all our students and to ensuring that no deserving student is denied admission because of financial difficulty.
Needy students can apply for financial aid which will be offered if they meet the eligibility criteria. Financial aid will be in the form of a financial aid package which is designed based on the recognition that a university education is a partnership involving the student, his/her family and the University. In structuring the package, an average student’s expected cost of attendance consisting of tuition fees and living expenses, is taken into account. The financial aid package that is offered may comprise a combination of loans, bursary, and work-study assistance, depending on the extent of the student’s level of neediness which is assessed based on the declared family income and mitigating factors, if any. Students who are in need of financial assistance can apply online for financial aid during the stipulated application period.
On top of the NUS bursaries, there are a number of Bursaries that we have secured through the very kind and strong support from the industry for needy civil engineering students and they are

Student Life
Q1 IS STUDENT LIFE IN CIVIL ENGINEERING ALL ABOUT STUDYING?
Definitely NOT! All work and no play makes NUS CEE students dull! There are many ways to get yourself involved in student life, and you will find yourself enriched with the wide array of activities available:
Join the NUS Civil Engineering Club: The NUS Civil Engineering Club is one of the oldest student clubs in the college. The club acts as a bridge between the faculty, administration, as well as the Civil Engineering Student Body. We regularly organize events, like CEE Day, student cohesion events, and welfare pack giveaways, as well as organize competitions for the student body. This year we are organizing the inaugural Built Environment Case Competition to allow students to propose innovative solutions to real world problems in the built environment industry. The club also serves as a feedback channel for students to faculty. If you think you have leadership potential, this is the perfect opportunity to contribute by getting involved in decision-making concerning student affairs. So do check us out!
Participate in Site Visits: The department regularly organizes visits to ongoing civil engineering and construction projects. This is an excellent opportunity to learn outside the classroom. Do join in to find out more at our website about the latest technologies and methods employed by leading firms.
Contribute back to Society: If you have a passion for giving back to society, you can consider participating in Operation Orion. Operation Orion is one of the oldest and most established Overseas Community Involvement Projects (OCIP) in NUS. We have won numerous awards for our work, the most recent being the Distinction Medal in the NUS Student Life Awards. Our work revolves around applying our engineering knowledge to help improve the lives of people in developing countries, and actually travelling there to implement our ideas. Below is a video on Operation Orion 2016 and do visit our website to find out more!
Alumni Talks: The department regularly invites alumni of past batches to come back and share their insights, experience and ideas with current students.
