NUS CEE Excels in the Green Concrete Cube Competition 2023

“NUS CEE Students Excel at “The Green Concrete Cube Competition 2023”

The future of sustainable construction took center stage at “The Green Concrete Cube Competition 2023,” held during the annual seminar hosted by the American Concrete Institute – Singapore Chapter (ACI-SC) on 27 Sep 2023. NUS CEE students showcased their dedication to innovation and sustainability, securing the 2nd and 3rd positions in this rigorous competition.

The challenge presented to participating teams was no small feat: create and submit four concrete cubes within a three-month window, and these cubes had to incorporate a minimum of 5 percent recycled materials in their mix design. This requirement emphasized the growing importance of sustainability in the concrete industry.

The competition drew a diverse pool of participants, including renowned organizations like Samwoh and SIKA, making the contest exceptionally intense. However, NUS CEE teams rose to the occasion with outstanding performance.

The “Concrete Connoisseurs team” and the “BlueSkies team” from NUS CEE demonstrated their innovative approach by utilizing construction slurry waste and waste glass as concrete constituents, partially or completely replacing water, cement, and sand. The result? Concrete cubes with a remarkable compressive strength exceeding 100 MPa.

These impressive achievements not only reflect NUS’s unwavering commitment to green technologies but also inspire the broader community to embrace eco-friendly practices in the construction industry. The success of NUS CEE students in “The Green Concrete Cube Competition 2023″ sets a shining example for the industry’s future, driving innovation and sustainability to new heights.”
