Congratulations to our Year 1 students from Civil Engineering, Team HECC for winning 2nd place in NUS Built Environment Case Competition (BECC) 2022. Team HECC also won the People’s Choice Award, with their poster garnering more than 400 likes on BECC’s Linkedin page.
BECC 2022, was organized by Civil Engineering and Real Estate undergraduates, the is a student-led initiative that aims to challenge the next generation of Built Environment leaders through a unique competition built on real-world challenges. BECC supplements a holistic education where academic projects may not foster interdisciplinary collaboration. Our goal is to fuel greater student interest in the industry and to be invested in the Built Environment, with our central vision being “Encouraging future leaders to implement creative and realistic solutions. Igniting enthusiasm and imparting industry knowledge.”
BECC 2022 is the third time this competition is being held since it was first initiated in 2020. Our problem statement this year focuses on 3 main aspects of the Built Environment: Productivity, Workplace Safety and Sustainability. Participants will be challenged to create solutions that targets one of these 3 aspects, as well as evaluate their own solutions based on real-life scenarios. BECC 2022 is honoured to be sponsored by Tiong Seng and supported by BCA. This year, we received an outstanding sign-up rate of more than 50 teams and over 150 participants. BECC attracted participants from more than 10 local Institutes of Higher Learning, including NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, SP, TP and ITE. The top 8 teams were mentored by industry experts from BCA’s Young Leaders Programme such as Wong Si Yong (Deputy Director, JTC), Joel Lau (Project Director, Huay Architects), Jason Tan (Principal Geotechnical Engineer, CPG Consultants) and Gilbert Beh (Associate, J Roger Preston).
On the competition day, we were honoured to have our guest of honour, MP Cheryl Chan as well as Mr Colin Tan, Deputy Director of Tiong Seng Group give an opening address. We also had a panel of distinguished judges, Mr Colin Tan, Er Tan Chun Yong (Group Director of Building Engineering, BCA), Prof Helen Chen (NUS Real Estate) as well as Prof Rajasekhar Balasubramanian (NUS Civil & Environmental Engineering). Mr Edwin Lee, BU head of Tiong Seng Contractors, also gave an insightful sharing about DfMA and how it was applied in various Tiong Seng projects.
The winning team was a group of second-year students from Singapore Polytechnic, with an innovative solution called “Project Waste”, a digital platform for tracking resources used in construction projects and predicting future usage using artificial intelligence. Our very own Year 1s from Civil Engineering, Team HECC, also clinched 2nd place with the new concept of Mass Engineered Bamboo (MEB), aiming to actualise carbon net-zero for the built environment. Team HECC also won the People’s Choice Award, with their poster garnering more than 400 likes on BECC’s Linkedin page. Last but not least, Team Lesgedid, a group of second year students from NUS Project and Facilities Management claimed 3rd place. Their solution, SafeHac, was an improvement to the conventional swivel pipe clamps used at worksites, aiming to enhance workplace safety and flexibility in joinery mechanics for scaffolding.
