The “Environmental Sustainability: Progress and Challenges” Symposium has concluded its work successfully on 8th April 2022. The symposium was co-organized by Sustainable Environment Research Cluster and Centre for Water Research, Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Design and Engineering, National University of Singapore. This symposium brought together more than 100 participants from environmental engineering industrial professionals, researchers, alumni and students to discuss ideas and diverse topics on the progress and challenges of environmental sustainability.
Prof Hu Jiangyong (Directors of environmental sustainability research cluster/ Centre for water research and Director of environmental engineering program) delivered opening remarks. Prof Hu introduced Environmental Sustainability Research cluster, Centre for Water Research and Environmental Engineering program. NUS’s Environmental Engineering program was ranked No. 10 in Environmental Science subject according to QS World university ranking 2022. The first session “Research presentation for your talents” was moderated by Prof Bae Sung Woo (Co-Chair of Environmental Sustainability symposium). The symposium was split into 2 interactive breakout rooms: Sustainable Solution for Water and Wastewater Treatment (Breakout room 1) and (Micro)Plastics and Algae and Circular Economy (Breakout room 2). Breakout room 1 was chaired by Dr Guo Huiling (Ngee Ann Poly) and co-chaired by Mr Zhang Hao (Kurita group). Break out room 2 was chaired by Ms Angalaparameswari M Ramanathan (NEA) and co-chaired by Mr Sung Yeow Kang (Sembcorp). There were 5 presentations in each breakout room. Following this, Prof Yu Liya (Co-Director of Environmental Sustainability Research Cluster and Co-Chair of Environmental Sustainability Symposium) chaired the invited speeches on environmental sustainability. There were 6 invited speakers, including Mr. Kavickumar Muruganathan, Mr. Sung Yeow Kang, Mr Rio Goh Khi Hao, Dr Yeo Zhiquan, Mr Emmanual Tay and Dr Elaine Quek. After each presentation, all the presenters actively discussed and answered the questions about the progress and challenges of environmental sustainability. In the next session, Prof Bae Sung Woo wrapped up by announcing the winners for young talents awards. The winners were Zhang Xiting, Yan Shuyue, Fang Zong Yan, Darren and Zeng Ruolin. Finally, Prof Hu Jiangyong delivered closing remarks, expressing appreciation for the active participation and valuable input made through the symposium. She welcomed all participants to join the up-coming seminar organized by Centre for Water Research – Advanced technologies for organics removal and disinfection in water and wastewater, which will be held on 31/5/2022.
