Green Doctors Programme – student initiative in recycling medical strip

Final Year Environmental Engineering students, Sophia Ding Ning Ke and Su Yee Shien were featured in The Straits Times for the title “NUS students come up with recycling method for medicine strips” on 21 Aug 2022.

Green Doctors Programme (GDP), initiated by NUH staff, was founded with the intent of creating a circular economy for medical blister packaging. Medical blister packaging was challenging to recycle because they are made of plastic and aluminium heat-sealed together with a type of glue, GDP found a way to dissolve the adhesive layer between the plastic and aluminium earlier this year. The team of 10 chemical, environmental and mechanical engineering students have made this possible. The team was mentored by Prof. Hu Jiangyong.

Recently GDP participated in the Youth Pharmacists Chapter SANDBOX Competition 2022. We are thrilled to announce that GDP was crowned the winning project (with 2K grant for the research and project development over a 1-year collaboration).  Our heartiest congratulations to the team.

A special thanks goes to Eugene Lau Cheng Jin, Jung Se Hee, Chia Miao Hui Deborah, Lavanya Ramaravikumar, and Jesslyn Tanawa Dharma for representing GDP at this competition
