International Building Design Competition 2020

Our NUS students have clinched top prizes at this year’s International Building Design Competition, winning 11 of the 15 prizes!!

Organised by BCA Singapore, the challenge was to design a mixed-use development that integrates residential, retail, commercial, community, and transportation features under one roof, so as to maximise land use in our land-scarce island state. 5 of the top prizes, including the Innovation Award, involved a multidisciplinary collaboration by Department of Architecture and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, NUS

Working with faculty members from both departments, the students proposed design solutions that were not only imaginative, but buildable.

The 2nd prize winning design went to Team ACE, which also clinched the Innovation Award with its multitude of green design features to promote self-sufficient and sustainable living. The team comprises of Students from Department of Architecture and Our CEE students Wang Wenjun, He Qilli, Li Yuan and Liu Xinyue.

Team Group Sixteen took home the Merit Prize. The team’s proposal seeks to mitigate the challenges of timber construction with a lightweight and sustainable high-rise timber building, a development yet seen in Singapore. The team comprises of Students from Department of Architecture and Our CEE students Benjamin Chia, Gerald Yap, Ong Jun Jet and Chan Hiu Fung.

Another Merit Prize went to Team Tree House! True to its name, the team’s design was inspired by a treehouse, an integration of vegetation and greenery in a high-rise urban environment. The team comprises of Students from Department of Architecture and Our CEE students Brian Ang Jun Hao, Yeo Chee Cong and Ramasamy Viknesh.
