Adjunct Professor CHOO Yoo Sang has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in Marine and Offshore Engineering by The Joint Branch of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects and The Institute of Marine Engineering Science and Technology (Singapore).
Prof. Choo has served as the Lloyd’s Register Foundation Chair Professor in National University of Singapore,NUS from 2009 to 2017. He served as the 106th President of The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology (IMarEST) in 2008, and was IMarEST’s first President from Asia.
He has served as Chairman of Singapore Mirror Committee for International Standards Organisation TC67/SC7 Offshore Structures, and member of International Institute of Welding Sub-commission XV-E: Tubular Structures for many years. He continues to be active in international and national committees.
Prof. Choo initiated and organised the series of Marine Operations Specialty Symposium (MOSS) in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Before joining NUS in 1987, he worked with McDermott Engineering Pte Ltd in Singapore and VO Offshore Ltd in UK. He has served as consultant or expert witness in major offshore construction and installation projects.
He and his team received the Stanley Gray Award (2001) and Stanley Gray Medal (2005) (from The Institute of Marine Engineering Science & Technology, UK); James Watt Medal (2005) (from The Institution of Civil Engineers, UK), and IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award (2003 and 2015) (from The Institution of Engineers Singapore).
Prof. Choo was Royal Academy of Engineering Distinguished Visiting Fellow in University of Oxford in 2014. He received the Kurobane Award (2015) from International Institute of Welding Sub-commission XV-E for outstanding contributions and achievements in the field of tubular structures.
