Centre for Transportation Research

The Center for Transportation Research (CTR) is a multi-disciplinary CEE Department research center established in October 1990, with the aim of making contributions to the transportation industry in Singapore. Its main role is to promote and coordinate multidisciplinary transportation research, and serves as a contact point with the industry and international research counterparts.  The CTR does not receive any operating budget to conduct research.  It relies on administrative support and research resources of the CEE Department to coordinate and conduct research. Its research program is driven by the transportation group of CEE Department, in collaboration with academic colleagues from other department in NUS.

  • Make productive contributions to the continued progress of the transportation industry in Singapore by conducting applied research and development work in contemporary and future transportation issues.
  • Provide technical leadership to advance transportation research, education, and practice for urban people/cargo mobility and global cargo movement.

CTR’s initial research effort focuses on transportation planning and urban transportation issues in the 1990s. Since early 2000s, leveraging on its multidisciplinary expertise, it has expanded its research coverage to address transportation logistics issues. The CEE members of CTR have worked closely with the land, sea and air transportation industry of Singapore. The topics of research projects undertaken include advanced transportation planning, control& management and policy; urban mobility and intelligent transport systems (ITS); transportation system modelling and optimization; transport safety; transport infrastructure engineering and management; highway & airfield engineering; pavement engineering; shipping & intermodal freight transport; container port operations; international trade & transport; and ship traffic safety analysis.

Besides research collaboration, CTR members maintains strong links with the industry through organizing research seminars, workshops and conferences. Since 1996, CTR has organized an annual Singapore Pavement Technology Symposium jointly with the highway industry. Internationally, CTR’s presence is marked by her effort in spearheading a university-based research network T-Log which is now participated by 12 regional universities, including Tsinghua University, Tokyo University, and Kyoto University, and the University of Melbourne. CTR is taking the lead in convening a bi-annual T-LOG international conference since 2005. Through this effort, CTR has established strong research interactions with Tsinghua University of China, Tokyo University and Kyoto University of Japan. CTR is also playing an important role in the Eastern Asia Society for Transportation Studies.
