Biography

Dr. Qiang Meng is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also a Member of the Academy of Engineering Singapore, serving as the Director of NUS Guangzhou Research Translation and Innovation Institute (NUS-GRTII) and as the Director of the Centre for Transport Research (CTR) within CEE. His extensive tenure at NUS includes roles as an Associate Professor from July 2010 to December 2015, an Assistant Professor from September 2003 to June 2010, and a Research Fellow (A) from June 2002 to September 2003.

Prof. Meng’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Science from East China Normal University in 1984, followed by a Master of Science from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1989. He then served as an Assistant Professor at Shandong Normal University of China from July 1989 to July 1997 before pursuing a PhD at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from August 1997 to November 2000. After completing his PhD in Civil Engineering at HKUST, he returned to Shandong Normal University, where he was appointed as a professor in the Information and Management School.

Prof. Meng’s research expertise spans three key areas: (i) urban mobility modelling and optimization, (ii) analysis of shipping and intermodal freight transportation, and (iii) Quantitative risk assessment (QRA) of transport operations. His exceptional contributions have positioned him as one of the leading experts in analysis, modelling, and optimization for urban mobility, shipping and intermodal freight transportation. In recognition of his outstanding work, Prof. Meng was honoured as one of the Top 2% of Scientists in the field of logistics and transportation by Stanford University for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. His scholarly impact is evidenced by his extensive high-quality publication record, comprising more than 260 articles in leading transportation and logistics journals. These contributions have left a lasting imprint on the field and can be explored further on his Google Scholar profile:

Beyond academic excellence, Prof. Meng has made substantial contributions to the industry through research projects supported by government funding agencies and corporate partners. Notable achievements include the development of a liner shipping decision support system and a ship traffic simulation prototype. His online licensed software tool, QRAFT, designed for quantitative risk assessment of road tunnels, has been applied in case studies within Singapore. More recently, his research team has achieved a significant milestone with the development of an AI-based short-term traffic state prediction model, funded by ST Engineering.

In his educational endeavours, Prof. Meng is guided by the philosophy of the ancient Chinese writer and philosopher Yu HAN (韩愈), who emphasized the role of a teacher in spreading wisdom, imparting knowledge, and resolving doubts (师者,所以传道受业解惑也). This philosophy shapes his approach to teaching and mentoring. Over the years, he has proudly supervised 17 PhD students and guided 20 postdoctoral research fellows since joining NUS. The successes of his graduates and mentees are a testament to his dedication, with many of them assuming prominent roles as associate professors, and full professors in various countries and regions, including Australia, France, Hong Kong SAR, Mainland China, Malaysia, and the United States. Notably, four of his mentees in Mainland China have been honoured as Distinguished Young Scholars by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Overseas).
