Virtual Reality (VR) Construction Inspection Game
90 Civil engineering students participated in the virtual Reality (VR) Construction Inspection Game on 16 & 17 November 2020 at NUS Central Library. Students were able to navigate around the construction site and identify defects in the construction, with the ability to use a variety of informational tools to assist them with their task.

Virtual Reality (VR) technology has been gaining prevalence in the construction industry over the past decade in areas of training, education and hazard recognition. The virtual environment created provides the user with an immersive experience of the construction site, unlike any conventional media used to communicate construction information. A more realistic experience increases the user’s performance and their knowledge retention from using VR construction training courses. The VR Construction Inspection Game provides such an experience of a construction inspector working on a site. The current version of the game includes modes with 3D BIM view and 1:1 Model Overlay view, in addition to standard 2D Drawings view to assist the player with their inspection.

Built Environment Case Competition 2020
Together with Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and National University of Singapore (NUS), the Built Environment Case Competition 2020 was organised.This year, the case revolved around technology, sustainability, productivity, and construction manpower. Participants were expected to relate and evaluate the current COVID-19 situation, proposing solutions that can benefit the Singaporean BE sector.

Out of 46 teams that registered and submitted their papers, 10 teams emerged as finalists and were given the opportunity to present their solutions to industry experts on the competition day.

"I am NUS CEE Student" series
The department has launched a series titled “I am NUS CEE student”. In this series, 4 students from NUS CEE will be sharing their journey as freshman and tips on how to prepare for the upcoming semester.

Fundraising - Project OceaNUS by Environmental Science and Engineering Students’ Club
The committee for Project OceaNUS ran a fundraising event on 14 February 2020 in conjunction with Valentine's day. Students sold flower bouquets to raise fund for their Project OceaNUS trip which was planned for 12 May to 20 June 2020 to Hanoi, Vietnam.

Due to the COVID- 19, the trip has been called off and the fund raised has been handed over to the 2021 Project OceaNUS.

Field trip to Singapore Botanic Gardens - ESE2102 (Principles & Practice in Infrastructure and Environment)
48 students who were enrolled in ESE2102 (Principles & Practice in Infrastructure and Environment) took a field trip to Singapore Botanic Garden on 4th and 5th February 2020 with 2 chaperone lecturer.Through the field trip, students understood that

  • Environmental monitoring serves a vital role in elaborating environmental policies and engineering control for mitigating environmental impacts associated with industrial and human activities.
  • Mitigation projects cannot prove their success without proper monitoring.
  • Fieldworks and chemical analyses are vital components of environmental monitoring, and these activities require risk assessments and implementation of safety control.

Operation Orion 2019 - Vietnam
Operation Orion 2019 consisting of 26 students went to Vietnam during winter break on 9th to 27th Dec 2019.

They visited Ho Chi Minh and Cầu Kè is a rural district (huyện) of Trà Vinh Province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. During their stay, they taught kids in the village school, built a bridge for the villages and they also built two mini-houses.

18 students from CE3165, together with 1 TA visited NatSteel Steel Mill at Tanjong Kling Road on 6 Jan 2020. The visit was lead by Mr Abhisek Verma, a research fellow.

CE1101A Civil Engineering Principles and Practice won the Best Design and Build Project Prizes of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE)
These students from CE1101A Civil Engineering Principles and Practice have just won the Best Design and Build Project Prizes of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).  The students were given the task of designing, building and testing a scaled model of a Floating Bridge across the Marina Bay. Site Visit to JTC Woodlands North Coast
Students visited the JTC Woodlands North Coast (Woodlands Ave 9) on 25 September 2019.

We are truly grateful to JTC for giving our students the opportunity to visit their JTC’s next generation of industrial estates at Woodlands north coast. The students have learned a lot about how digitalization is transforming the construction industry.

The immersive and interactive learning, they shared how they use Integrated Digital Delivery to improve the design, construction and operation of their buildings.

ESE2000 Field Trip
A/Prof Karina Gin together with 43 students went to Lorong Halus Constructed Wetland on 15 Nov 2019 for ESE2000 Field trip.

The students saw how leachate from landfill is treated using the aeration lagoons and constructed wetland.

CEE EVE Alumni and Student Dialogue
This year’s EVE Alumni Dialogue Session hosted by Prof Balasubramanian was on 1 Oct at E-Cube, NUS. We had the privilege of having our alumni Ms Selina Patra, Research Project Manager from GA circular; Ms Aqila Aziz Alkaff, Senior Executive from Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources; Mr Arnan Koh Yeang Ngee, Principal Engineer from Singapore Environmental Consultancy And Solutions Pte Ltd; Mr Lan Yi Chieh, Executive Engineer from Surbana Jurong and Mr Wee Yong Han Vincent, Civil Engineer from Arup Singapore Pte Ltd to be our guest panel speakers.

It was a lively and interactive discussion between the panel and students.

CEE Students and CVE Alumni Dialogue Session 2019 - 27 Aug 2019
This year’s CVE Alumni Dialogue Session hosted by Dr Chew Soon Hoe was on 27 Aug at E-Cube, NUS. We had the privilege of having our alumni Dr Faizal Zulkefli, Executive Manager from Automation & Robotics, Advanced Construction Materials (ARACM); Mr Ricky Nagatie, Senior Engineer from HDB; Ms Caroline Ong, Manager from Beca; Mr Cuthbert Yeo, Design Engineer from Surbana Jurong and Ms Rebecca Tan, Project Engineer from Santarli Construction Pte Ltd to be our guest panel speakers.

It was a lively and interactive discussion between the panel and students.

NEA seminar and Career Talk - 29 Jan 2019
NEA seminar and Career Talk was held on 29 Jan 2019. We were privileged to have Mr Dalson Chung, Director (Industry Development and Promotion), NEA and Managing Director (CleanEnviro Summit Singapore) to talk on “An Overview of The ES Industry Landscape in Singapore: Opportunities and Challenges”, Mr Rio Goh, Co-founder and Managing Director of Ministry Holdings Pte Ltd spoke on “The Hero Within” and Mr Thomas Wong, Co-founder of Impetus Conceptus Pte Ltd on “Finding Gold”.

The annual BCA- NUS Networking Session - 25 Jan 2019
The annual BCA- NUS Networking Session for NUS Engineering students took place on 25 Jan 2019 (Friday) from 12 pm to 5pm outside NUS Faculty Engineering LT6. This event was jointly organised by Building and Construction Authority (BCA), 3 NUS Student clubs: CE Club, ESESC, DE (SDE) and Department of Civil & Environment Engineering. We thank the 32 companies participated in the event. The company representatives shared on available scholarships, internship and career opportunities. A total of 7 companies conducted talks for the students.
