Professor Ho Puay-Peng extended as UNESCO Chair of Architectural Heritage Conservation and Management in Asia
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that Professor Ho Puay-Peng's term as Chair of Architectural Heritage Conservation and Management in Asia has been extended from May 2024 for another four years. Prof Ho was first appointed when the Chair was established in May 2020 in recognition of his considerable achievements in education and training, research and professional practice in architectural conservation.
The Department of Architecture has greatly advanced work in this area since then. A milestone achievement was the launch of the Department's Architectural Conservation Lab (ArClab) in 2022, with Prof Ho as the head of the Management Committee. ArClab, housed in a 140-year-old heritage building, undertakes training and research focusing on developing innovative techniques and undertaking cutting-edge cross-disciplinary collaborative research across digital conservation technology, material sciences, and building aesthetics.
The Department's architectural conservation experts have extended education and training in conservation practices to many other countries. Among the accomplishments was developing and implementing the Sustainable Heritage Management course hosted by UNESCO Bangkok. This course supported heritage professionals from Southeast Asia in upskilling and reskilling their core competencies, defined under the UNESCO Competence Framework for Cultural Heritage Management.
