Carnival fun at CDE Day 2023
About 1000 students and staff joined in the carnival fun at the annual college event, CDE Day 2023, which was held on 18 January 2023. Organised by the CDE Office of Student Life (OSL) and CDE Club, the carnival held at NUS E4 Level 4 aims to celebrate college excellence and showcase the vibrancy and diversity of the College. Students, staff and alumni guests alike were immersed in the wide array of interesting and fun activities.
Rallied by the CDE Club, 14 CDE sub clubs and student groups put up games and activity booths including the Industrial Design Club’s plastic bloom station where attendees get to try repurposing used plastic bottles into beautiful flowers for eternal display. The CDE Day Special – Wall-E & sustainability themed Escape Room at E-Cubes – was helmed by the CDE Club’s special projects team with inputs from OSL. Participants praised the escape room as challenging and interesting.
Guests were spoilt for choice with the multiple carnival food booths lined up at the event, including ice cream, hotdog bun and fruits. Many students were also thrilled at the two Lucky Draw sessions held, where 10 lucky students walked away with crowd-favourite prizes such as polaroid camera, tablet and Bluetooth speaker.
Lastly, at the OSL booths, carnival attendees tried their hands at crafting their personalised phone charms and played the wellness quiz and game facilitated by our wellness ambassadors and peer student supporters.
Congratulations to our iDP students' team (i.e. Wang Mingchuan, Shin Jin, and Stephen Chua (from R to L in the attached picture)) on clinching the Grand Prize at this year's International Space Challenge 2023 (https://spacefaculty.asia/isc_2023/). The International Space Challenge (ISC) is an annual case study competition that aims to connect young minds worldwide with industry experts to nurture interest in space tech, and it's applications. In line with this year's theme on climate change, our EG2311 students Wang Mingchuan, Shin Jin, Stephen Chua and Lau Ern Tze proposed and conceptualized EclipseSat. This 12U cube satellite orbits in Sun-Synchronous Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Its primary mission is to take pictures of cities at night and observe the light pollution level of the cities. It uses a spectrometer and breaks down the city lights into specific wavelengths, analyzing the type of light bulbs used by the cities and how it affects the city's energy consumption and climate change. This winning submission is an extension of the EG2311
The NUS team comprising Civil Engineering students: Tristan Tan Yong Cheun, Chen Ge and Gao Xinge won 3rd place in International Concrete Competition 2022 held on 7 Nov Nov 2022 - 8 Nov Nov 2022.
The 5th International Concrete Competition (ICC) is a Concrete Design Competition of CIVILWEEK 2022 driven by the necessity of innovation and creativity in concrete design to accommodate our infrastructural growth to be more durable, cost-efficient, and environmentally friendly. The International Concrete Competition CIVILWEEK 2022 is organised by The Civil Engineering Student Association, Civil Engineering Study Programme, Faculty of Engineering, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta. The competition highlighted the theme ‘High Early-Strength SCC With Waste Based Materials’ following the need for sustainable, economic, and eco-friendly construction projects for essential public infrastructure during the post-pandemic. The NUS student team proposed an innovative low-carbon concrete made with waste glass. The concrete can exhibit both high early-age strength (1-day strength > 21 MPa) and high flowability (> 500 mm). Ph.D. student Mr Zhang Fengzhuo, supervised by Associate Professor Tan Yan Fu, Vincent, from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been awarded a Singapore Data Science Consortium (SDSC) PhD Dissertation Research Fellowship 2022. The SDSC Dissertation Research Fellowship is a yearly award aiming to promote and recognise PhD students' innovative and impactful data science thesis work. This programme provides up to ten (10) cash awards of S$10,000 for doctoral students at Singapore universities.

CODE Exhibition 2023
The inaugural Communication of Design and Engineering ( or CODE ) Exhibition presented the communication works by students who have undergone modules in communications development. CODE aims to showcase and amplify the importance of storytelling and the effective communication of ideas; skills students should acquire before moving into the workforce. Projects from five courses were strategically selected to showcase the best of students' abilities and the scalability of design communications in CDE. The Grand Opening Night was held on 3 February and was subsequently opened to the public from 6 February to 10 February at SDE3 Level 4 Barrel Room.

Annabelle Chan (Year 4), Celine Chan (Year 4), and Karin Chew (Year 3), from the Division of Industrial Design, Jai Lulla (Year 3) from NUS Computing, and Gareth Wang (Year 3), Department of Psychology won the First Prize for the JTC-Hyundai Future Mobility Challenge on 12 January 2023. These students were from the previous round of the Design Platform "Design for Future Mobility," supervised by Assistant Professor Lee Jung Joo from the Division of Industrial Design and had extended their learning in this competition. Page Break Student Showcase at SAM
Students' works from the 'Visualising the City' platform from the Division of Industrial Design, supervised by Part-time Lecturer Lim Qi Xuan, were showcased at the Page Break Student Showcase at the Singapore Art Museum. The Page Break Student Showcase looked at how everyday objects and scenes are explored through the medium of the art book and brought together contributions from Laselle, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, ADM and NUS. The show ran from 19 January to 29 January 2023 and was held at the SAM Residencies (EX-SITU Space).
