"Our class ambassadors are the bridge between the past, present and future of NUS and CDE."

This statement by Associate Professor Teo Chiang Juay, Assistant Dean (Alumni Relations), paid tribute to how our alumni Class Ambassadors helped strengthen bonds within the CDE community.

Assoc Prof Teo was speaking at the second Class Ambassadors Network Event held at NUSS Guild House on 24 April 2024. The event was a gathering of both current and aspiring Class Ambassadors, who were joined by Professor Teo Kie Leong, the Dean of CDE, and other members of the CDE management team. In total, there were over 100 individuals in attendance, all of whom were eager to engage with one another and make meaningful connections.

Formally appointed by NUS, Class Ambassadors play a crucial role in ensuring continual engagement between alumni and CDE after graduation by organising events and facilitating networking opportunities.

Mr Jax Lee Jia Xing (Chemical Engineering, Class of 2009) is the CEO and co-founder of Nanolumi, an advanced materials company. He has been a mentor, industry expert, and advocate for start-ups, contributing to several NUS initiatives and programmes. Mr Lee shared, “My batchmates and I had wonderful memories during our time in NUS, and we wanted our juniors to have such experiences too. That’s why we initiated the Chemical Engineering Class of 2009 Bursary — and we have raised over $100,000 to date!”

Even young alumni who graduated as recently as last year were present to find out from more senior Ambassadors how they could contribute to their alma mater. Ms Nivedha Nagarajan (Civil Engineering, Class of 2023) was the former NUS Civil Engineering Club president and now works as a structural engineer at Ramboll. On why she was considering being a Class Ambassador, Ms Nagarajan stated, “I wanted to know how I could help my juniors in the same way my seniors helped me with their knowledge and experience in school and the working world.”

DID-BARC-Designers

BARC, an alternative control video game, designed by Yong Zhen Zhou (Industrial Design, Class of 2022) with the help of Joshua Tan Jianhao, a Year 3 Industrial Design student, was shortlisted and showcased at Alt.Ctrl.GDC 2024. Both travelled to San Francisco to present BARC in the Moscone Center where GDC 2024 was being held from 18 to 22 March 2024. The game’s barcode scanning and receipt printing action garnered a great reception from the games industry, with people consistently queuing to play the game.

Alt.Ctrl.GDC is an event within the Game Developers Conference (GDC) held annually, where developers around the world are invited to display games they have created that use creative and unusual alternative controllers, presenting a different way to engage with games from the conventions within the industry. From the submissions, a few are selected to bring their game to the expo floor during the convention for the wider community to engage with.
