STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS & STUDENT LIFE

Issue 07 2023

On 21 July 2023, over 600 freshmen from 14 undergraduate programmes gathered in Block EA of CDE’s sprawling campus for the CDE Freshman Welcome 2023, and they were fully engaged in the vibrant atmosphere of CDE! The students received warm welcomes from Acting Dean Professor Teo Kie Leong and Vice Dean Student Life Professor Ho Ghim Wei. Dr Elliot Law, Assistant Dean and Ms Low Zhiqi, from the Office of Undergraduate Programmes, dived into academic details, including an introduction to the NUS academic systems, recommendations on how to manage their learning journeys and the NUS systems and resources available to students. Faculty and students were present to showcase fascinating robots from NUS RoboMasters and project displays from the Innovation & Design Programme. They also introduced the visitors to the CDE Club, provided useful information about NUS Libraries development opportunities by the Centre for Future Ready Graduates(@nuscfg ), and security must-knows from Campus Emergency and Security services.

The NUS Senior RoboMaster team (Team LumiNUS!) placed second out of 19 teams at the 2023 RMNA competition in Seattle held 6-9 July at the University of Washington. The competition involves human-operated and fully autonomous robots competing in a 3v3 game where the goal is to fight the enemy team and destroy their base. Despite having fewer than 30 team members compared to the first-placed team's 70 students, our NUS team was one of only two teams to deliver a fully autonomous robot for the competition. The team was supported by sponsors – Mr Hoong Yik Luen and the Micron Foundation.

Launch of Galassia-2
Galassia-2 - the latest NUS-built satellite to go into orbit blasted into space from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in southern India at 900am SG time, 30 July 2023. Designed and built by a multidisciplinary team of students from CDE, it is equipped with a multispectral camera, the primary mission of the nanosatellite is remote sensing for agriculture and environmental change. The launch marks another milestone in CDE’s training of the next generation of space pioneers here in Singapore. Following on the heels of Galassia 1 launched in 2015, the project involved around 20 students from the NUS Innovation and Design Programme (iDP) hosted by the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC) and the NUS Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Read more about the launch and hear from two of the students who worked on building it and have gone on to careers in the space industry: https://cde.nus.edu.sg/news-detail/student-built-galassia-2-satellite-blasts-into-orbit/

MArch student Ryan Quah received the prestigious Gold Award in the Architecture Category of the 2022 Nippon Paint Asia Young Designer Awards. Titled "Urban Tarzan," Ryan's design project presents an innovative solution that brings nature even closer to home. Beyond merely establishing additional green spaces, the project aims to foster an ecological and circular system that harmonizes the users, site, species, and climate. The tower design typology is also adaptable to be constructed in leftover ground spaces and can be replicated in various locations, making it well-suited for the land-scarce Singapore..
