Prof Liu Bin honoured with President’s Science Award

Liu Bin_

Congratulations to Prof Liu Bin (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) on being awarded the prestigious President’s Science Award (PSA) for 2024.

The award – the nation’s highest scientific honour – recognises her breakthrough research on how organic semiconductors emit light. Her discovery sheds light - literally! - on a long-standing scientific puzzle and has the potential to open up new technological possibilities in areas such medical diagnostics, optical data encryption.

Prof Liu is a world-renowned researcher in the field of organic functional materials. She currently holds the post of Deputy President (Research and Technology) at NUS and Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor.

Prof Teo Kie Leong, Dean, stated that CDE has benefited greatly from Prof Liu Bin’s contributions as a leading faculty member in the College. “A leader in every sense of the word, she inspires our young academics and students to stretch themselves to achieve new heights.”

“Prof Liu Bin was a remarkable catalyst as Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering. From leading the recruitment of the best academic talent to sparking exciting new educational and research programmes, she brought the department through a period of rapid development,” shared Prof Saif Khan, the current Head of the Department.

Research Engineer receives Young Researcher Award at the International Conference on Solid-State Devices and Materials

Samarth-Jain-ECE

Mr Samarth Jain, a Research Engineer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering under the supervision of Associate Professor Ang Kah Wee and Assistant Professor Fong Xuanyao Kelvin, received the Young Researcher Award at the 2024 International Conference on Solid-State Devices and Materials (SSDM). This is the third consecutive year a member of the Advanced Nanotechnology Group, led by Associate Professor Ang, has won the award.

Samarth’s work, focused on neuromorphic computing, was recognised for his paper on "Heterogeneous Integration of 32 x 32 1S1R Crossbar Array using 2D Hafnium Diselenide on a Si Platform," which demonstrated advancements in low-latency, energy-efficient compute-in-memory hardware. His research, which involved breakthroughs in wafer-scale 2D materials and integration techniques, culminated in a system-level neural network hardware accelerator capable of efficient convolutional image processing.
