Exploring Architectural Theories: Highlights from the NUS X SUTD Intervarsity Debate
Kicking off the academic year with a bang, the NUS X SUTD Intervarsity Debate, hosted by The Architecture Society (TAS) and SUTDio, took center stage last August at NUS Design Studio, SDE3. Year 3 Bachelor of Arts in Architecture student Fatimah Binte Mazlan, was named Best Speaker for her insightful and engaging delivery.
The debate delved into whether theoretical frameworks are relevant in tackling Singapore’s contemporary housing challenges. The NUS team championed a shift away from theoretical frameworks, advocating for innovative, data-driven design methods. Meanwhile, the SUTD team passionately argued that even quantitative approaches are deeply entwined with social theories and essential architectural principles. Despite a thrilling 50-50 split in audience votes, the judges awarded the victory to the SUTD team for their compelling arguments.

NUS Civil Engineering students win top award at Built Environment Case Competition 2024
On 15 August 2024, a team of NUS Civil Engineering students emerged as the Winner of the Built Environment Case Competition (BECC), an annual event organised by the NUS CE Club since 2019. The theme for BECC 2024 was Coastal Protection, challenging participants to propose innovative solutions to address rising sea levels.
Team CAP5, comprising Henrikus Nikolas Ardi, Justin Halim, Vivien Trisha Javin, and Jin Zixin, clinched the first prize for their groundbreaking proposal, the EcoDam. Designed to protect Singapore's North-West coast, the EcoDam offers a durable, sustainable, and easy-to-maintain alternative to traditional coastal defences while simultaneously promoting natural habitat restoration.
The team was mentored by Dr Du Hongjian (Senior Lecturer) and Ng Jun Liang Ben (PhD student) from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Student wellness events in September
Students, please remember to take regular breaks for your mental health as work for the semester ramps up.
This September, graduate and undergraduate students enjoyed the wellness events organised by the Office of Student Life to help CDE students destress and decompress from the rigours of university life. The month kicked off with the Urban Hike on 6 September 2024. The participants trekked tirelessly through the Southern Ridges Trail despite the warm evening. Not only did they sweat it out, but they made some new friends along the way. Check out the highlights below.
If trekking wasn't quite their thing, students were invited to meet some furry friends to get their minds off of schoolwork. Take-A-Paws is a regular workshop organised by the wellness team where they get to interact with four-legged friends who are eager for attention. Check out these three paw pals from The Dogtors who came down to spend time with CDE students!
Keep an eye out for other fun activities from the CDE Office of Student Life! To find out about other student wellness events, follow them on Instagram here: @cde.studentwellness
