Professor Lim Chwee Teck elected International Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering

Professor Lim Chwee Teck, Director of NUS iHealthtech and NUS Society Professor, has been elected an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Congratulations to Prof Lim Chwee Teck, Director of NUS iHealthtech and NUSS Professor, on being elected an International Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, one of the highest honours in global engineering. 

His work in biomedical engineering has led to advances in microfluidic and wearable technologies that improve disease diagnosis and therapy. He has translated his research into healthcare solutions through six start-ups, including a cancer-detecting biochip that enables less invasive diagnostics. 

On his election, he shared: “I am deeply humbled to be elected to the Royal Academy of Engineering. I want to share this with my mentors, collaborators, past and present students and staff whose work continues to inspire me. I also want to express my gratitude to CDE for the trust and freedom to grow and contribute. I do owe so much to my former and current Deans and Department Heads for the tremendous support they have provided me all these years.” 

Prof Lim is the first and only Singaporean elected to both the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society – a milestone that reflects the global impact of his work.

Assistant Professor Zhang Yamin and Assistant Professor Irmandy Wicaksono named to MIT Technology Review’s TR35 Innovators List 

Asst Prof Zhang Yamin (Presidential Young Professor, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) and Asst Prof Irmandy Wicaksono (Presidential Young Professor, Division of Industrial Design) have been named on the MIT Technology Review’s 2025 Innovators Under 35 (TR35) list. The prestigious annual list recognises outstanding young innovators who are shaping the future of science and technology.

Asst Prof Zhang Yamin’s recognition spotlights her recent work on a tiny, wireless and biodegradable pacemaker that dissolves harmlessly in the body after use. Her invention offers a safer alternative to conventional devices that require risky removal surgery, and could also open new possibilities in pain management, wound healing and tissue regeneration. Asst Prof Irmandy Wicaksono is recognised for developing health-sensing fabrics that can monitor vital signs and movements in real time. Durable, washable and comfortable to wear, his textiles could transform healthcare by enabling unobtrusive patient monitoring at home, while also powering applications from sports performance tracking to next-generation space suits. Assistant Professor Ang Yu Qian awarded IBPSA Outstanding Young Contributor Award 2025

Assistant Professor and Presidential Young Professor Ang Yu Qian was recently awarded the highly competitive International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA) Outstanding Young Contributor Award 2025.

This award recognises an individual at the beginning of their career who has demonstrated potential for significant contributions to the field of building performance simulation. It is highly selective, with only one recipient every two years.

Adjunct Professor Teo Ho Pin awarded Singapore International Facility Management Association (SIFMA) Apex Award

Congratulations to Adjunct Professor Teo Ho Pin, on receiving the Singapore International Facility Management Association (SIFMA) Apex Award for his outstanding service to the Facilities Management (FM) industry. Dr Teo was also conferred CDE's Distinguished Alumni award in 2023.

Dr Teo brings over 30 years of expertise in township management, with leadership experience spanning both the public and private sectors in the real estate and construction industries. He served as Mayor of Singapore’s North West District from 2001 to 2020 and was Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang from 1996 to 2020. Across his 23 years in Parliament, he chaired Government Parliamentary Committees for National Development, Environment and Water Resources, Home Affairs and Law.

At CDE, Dr Teo serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of the Built Environment, where he teaches undergraduate courses on township management, sharing valuable insights from decades of practice and policymaking.

CDE faculty celebrated at NUS University Awards

At this year’s NUS University Awards, two members of the CDE community were recognised for what truly defines leadership in research, mentorship, and in shaping future talent.

Assistant Professor Hou Yi received the Young Researcher Award for pioneering advances in perovskite solar cell technology, pushing the boundaries of efficiency and translating lab innovation into real-world energy solutions.

Professor Yan Ning was honoured with the Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award for his deep commitment to guiding and inspiring the next generation of researchers. His mentorship empowers students to grow into confident, independent thinkers and leaders.

In his address, NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye commended this year's award recipients for their impact and dedication.

"Our award winners inspire us to renew our purpose and determination to strive for quality and excellence," he said.

Professor Yan Ning awarded Outstanding Researcher Award by Asia-Pacific Association of Catalysis Societies

Congratulations to Professor Yan Ning on receiving the Outstanding Researcher Award from the Asia-Pacific Association of Catalysis Societies. The award was presented at the 10th Asia-Pacific Congress on Catalysis (APCAT-2025) on 4 August 2025 in Singapore.

The Outstanding Researcher Award is given once every three years to recognise researchers in the Asia-Pacific region for their outstanding contribution to catalysis science and technology. Prof Yan was recognised for his significant contributions and leadership in the field, reflecting his strong impact on catalysis research.

CDE faculty named to American Geophysical Union (AGU) 2025 Honours Programme

Two members from the Civil and Environmental Engineering community have been recognised by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in its 2025 Honours Programme. 

Professor Rajasekhar Balasubramanian, Provost’s Chair Professor, was elected a Fellow of AGU, one of the Union’s highest honours, recognising his “distinguished and sustained contributions to the field of Air Quality.” Since joining NUS in 1996, he has led an interdisciplinary research programme on air quality, with outcomes spanning environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation, and public health. He said: “I am truly honoured and delighted… I am indeed grateful to NUS for providing a scholarly environment to pursue research of my interest across diverse disciplines.” 

Assistant Professor He Xiaogang received the Natural Hazards Early Career Award for his research on climate-driven hazards such as droughts and floods, and their cascading impacts on global water, food, and energy security. “This AGU award represents recognition not just of my individual research, but of Civil and Environmental Engineering's growing leadership in addressing global and regional challenges of extreme weather events,” he said. 

The 2025 honourees were announced on 24 September and will be recognised at AGU25, which convenes in New Orleans from 15-19 December 2025.

Two CDE faculty named to SG100 Women in Tech 2025 list

From advancing smart grids to developing sustainable nanomaterials, Professors Dipti Srinivasan and Yang Hui Ying are shaping solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Their leadership and contributions have now been recognised with their inclusion on the SG 100 Women in Tech (SG100WIT) 2025 list. 

Unveiled at the Tech3 Forum by Minister Josephine Teo, the SG100WIT list honours women who are driving innovation, leading transformative projects, and inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in technology. 

Professor Dipti Srinivasan, Provost’s Chair Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Head of the Centre for Green Energy Management & Smart Grid (GEMS), said the recognition affirms the value of applying AI and computing innovations to create smarter, more sustainable energy systems, and reflects the collective efforts of her students and collaborators. To young women in tech, she added: “Be bold, keep learning, and believe in your ability to solve meaningful problems.” 

Professor Yang Hui Ying (Materials Science and Engineering) described the award as “a celebration of women scientists, engineers, and technology leaders." Known for her work on nanomaterials for energy and water technologies, she had this message for aspiring women in STEM: “Whether you’re building with LEGOs, gazing at the stars, or designing your first video game, that spark of wonder is what drives the world’s greatest discoveries.” 

Their recognition on the SG100WIT 2025 list highlights them as role models whose achievements and journeys will inspire more girls and women to pursue technology, shaping the future of innovation at local, regional, and global levels.

Assistant Professor Denis Bandurin receives NRF Fellowship (Class of 2025)

Congratulations to Assistant Professor Denis Bandurin on receiving the NRF Fellowship (Class of 2025), a prestigious award that recognises outstanding young researchers for their contributions to advancing impactful science and technology.

Asst Prof Bandurin’s research focuses on dimensionality reduction in emerging superconducting systems, paving the way for a new generation of quantum sensors.

The Experimental Condensed Matter Physics group, led by Asst Prof Denis Bandurin, conducts research on the fundamental properties of novel quantum materials at the nanoscale, with a particular focus on their interactions with infrared and terahertz radiation.
