Adjunct Professor Quek Gim Pew awarded Presidentā€™s S&T Medal

Distinguished Alumni and Adjunct Professor (College of Design and Engineering) Quek Gim Pew was conferred the prestigious Presidentā€™s Science and Technology Medal for his pivotal role in developing Singaporeā€™s research ecosystem in critical areas including defence capabilities, space technology, advancing quantum engineering, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing.

The Presidentā€™s Science and Technology Medal is awarded to individuals who have made distinguished, sustained, and exceptional contributions and played a strategic role in advancing Singaporeā€™s development through the promotion and management of science and technology (S&T).

Adj Prof Quek graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (1st Class Hons) in Electrical Engineering in 1981. He was accorded the NUS Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award in 2014, and the prestigious Outstanding Service Award as part of the NUS University Awards 2023.

Throughout his career, he has been guided by his belief and commitment to harness science and technology to serve national needs and contribute to Singaporeā€™s continued success. He has been a strong advocate for STEM education, initiating various nationwide programmes, such as the Young Defence Scientist Programme, which introduces students to emerging topics in science and engineering.

Associate Professor Qiu Cheng Wei (Dean's Chair) was awarded the Presidentā€™s Science Award 2023 for his trailblazing contributions to topological thermal materials and diffusion physics, pioneering the fundamental framework in structured thermal metamaterials, quantum heat transport, advanced cooling technologies, and non-reciprocal thermal photonics.

His work has established new frontiers in the classical fields of thermal diffusion, circumventing the intrinsic limitations of conventional heat transfer laws and enabling more effective solutions to global warming, the energy crisis, heat waste, and the self-heating of integrated microelectronic chips. Assoc Prof Qiu's outstanding contributions extend beyond the pursuit of academic excellence. Under his dedicated mentorship, nearly 30 research group members have emerged as leaders of high-tech companies and achieved their own academic standing and prestigious accolades.

Dr I R Suhito awarded the ASEAN-ROK award for Excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Pioneer Category

Dr Suhito (Research Fellow in Asst. Prof Andy Tay's Lab) was awarded the ASEAN-ROK award for Excellence in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Pioneer category. This annual award is given by the government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) in support of the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to encourage young scientists to actively contribute on research in STI for promoting the socio-economic development of both countries. This award is open to professionals in any field of natural sciences or engineering and facilitates collaborative research between ROK and ASEAN member states. The prize is sponsored by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and ICT (MSIT) of the Republic of Korea.

CEE Faculty Presented 2023 Commendation Awards for Standardisation

Assistant Professor Chew Soon Hoe and Professor Hu Jiangyong were presented the 2023 Commendation Award by the Singapore Standards Council and the Singapore Accreditation Council, together with Enterprise Singapore, for their contributions and commitment to Singapore Standardisation and Accreditation Programmes.

Covid Resilience Medal awarded to Assoc Prof Karina Gin and Team

Associate Professor Gin Yew-Hoong, Karina and her COVID lab team members Sumedha Bhatia, Benjamin Lim Chun Min, G Reuben Gangesh had received the Prime Ministerā€™s officeā€™s COVID-19 resilience medal on 1 June 2023. The COVID-19 Resilience Medal and COVID-19 Resilience Certificate are new national awards to recognise the substantive contributions of those who participated directly in Singaporeā€™s fight against COVID-19.

I K Gold Medal 2023 TN Goh

On 18 October 2023, Professor Goh Thong Ngee received the Ishikawa-Kano Gold Medal (IKA-Gold) award during the 2023 Asian Network for Quality (ANQ) Congress, hosted by the Vietnam Quality Association of Ho Chi Minh City. This award is given to professionals from the field of quality management who made unique contributions to the cause of quality through work in the development of theory, application and dissemination of quality principles, concepts and methods over at least 25 years in at least 3 countries. Only one award is given every two to three years. The IKA-Gold is the highest-level award of ANQ and amongst the highest in the world.
