CDE GIVING

CDE Bursary Night

1

Our Dean shared his thoughts and appreciation for generous benefactors at CDE’s inaugural Bursary Night last Friday, 11 October 2024. To the crowd gathered at the Bursary Night dinner, which included over 100 donors, guests, students, and staff, he declared, “This evening is special as we celebrate your generous contributions, which have positively impacted our students…I am heartened that our community has rallied to this worthy cause.”

CDE students who are bursary recipients met and engaged with their benefactors, celebrating their contributions that have enabled students to have equal opportunities regardless of their financial backgrounds.

Year 3 Chemical Engineering student Goh En Hui aspires to be a chemical engineer who prioritises sustainability. With financial help from the Class of 1976 Engineering Bursary, she is on the way to realising her aspiration. "Thanks to the bursary, I could focus on building my dreams and career aspirations,” said En Hui. She has already started to pay it forward by leading Project Cheway, a student-initiated overseas community activity by the Chemical Engineering Students’ Society.

Prof Teo announced that a new CDE Bursary fund was established this year with the backing of the NUS management and the NUS Alumni Student Advancement Committee, Mr Seah Cheng San, Co-Chairperson of the NUS Alumni Advisory Board, and our Engineering Class of 1982 alums.

The evening wrapped up on a high note, with student recipients coming together on stage to sing ‘You Raise Me Up’ to show their appreciation. Let us join them and our Dean in raising our voices in thanks to them all!

Lighthouse Club gift top-up extends support to more students

CDE is fortunate to have the partnership of our extended community to nurture and support our students in their learning journey with us.

The Lighthouse Club (Singapore) is a non-profit organisation established in the UK in 1956 and in Singapore in 2000. It supports and promotes the professional development of individuals working in the construction industry in Singapore.

Since 2009, the Lighthouse Club has supported 23 students from our Department of the Built Environment with annual bursaries. It has now extended it to include support for students from our Department of Architecture and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with an additional ‘top-up’ gift of $30,000.

Professor Heng Chye Kiang, Deputy Dean, CDE, thanked the Lighthouse Club for its continued support of bursaries for our students, adding, “We are inspired by your desire and actions to deliver meaningful impact, and we hope to continue partnering with you to build a better future for our talented youths.”

This extension of support was marked with a signing ceremony on 3 October 2024, attended by Prof Heng and Lighthouse Club (Singapore) President Ms Khanh Nguyen.

In greeting the CDE representatives at the event, Ms Khanh Nguyen said: “The gift agreement signed today represents not just Lighthouse Club's investment in education, but a commitment to cultivating a more inclusive and compassionate construction sector. By nurturing future leaders in the Singapore construction industry, we empower them to create safer workplaces and enhance the lives of everyone in our industry, including our invaluable migrant workforce."

Financial assistance, such as bursaries, scholarships, and awards, is not the only avenue to support students. Opportunities for internships, overseas learning experiences, and industrial attachments are also impactful ways industry partners could help make our students’ educational journeys more comprehensive.
