Art X Tech 2023

You may wonder what art has to do with space exploration and hard technical skills. Well, 80 pre-university students from over 20 different institutions gathered for CDE’s Art X Tech 2023, which took place on CDE’s campus from 11 to 14 December, to explore just that.

Art can alter our perspective on things. Design and engineering skills equip us with the necessary tools to understand how we can make an impact. The Art X Tech workshops were organised to offer students the chance to explore and transform their view of the world in ways they may not have previously considered.

Students were challenged to create a catapult robot that automates the painting process for creating artwork. And no, it was not simply to create a paintball machine!

To understand that the challenge can be viewed and addressed in different ways, we enabled the connections between the students and industry experts from the James Dyson Foundation , the Space Faculty and our very own academics and tech experts.

The activities students were immersed in included:

Egg Drop Workshop by the Space Faculty – Putting knowledge of engineering principles and resource management skills to the test, students were tasked to build a rover and lander with their teammates, to safely deliver the payload.

Workshop in Visual Communication – Understanding fundamentals of Visual Communication and its impact on our daily lives. Students also engaged in a hands-on activity in Canva to convey their ideas pictorially.

Journey to Space at STAR – Exploring satellites used in space travel and understanding different space manoeuvres. Students completed a virtual simulation activity to understand spacecraft's movements in various operations.

Arduino Workshop by CDE Mentors – Learning about Arduino hardware and software with hands-on wiring and coding practices to acquire the necessary knowledge to complete their group project.

We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the following individuals who have contributed so much to Art X Tech 2023:

CDE Student mentors: Chloe Ng Xuanhui, Deepsri Jayachandran, Elton Lim, Glendon Tan, Harini Ravichandran, Jasra Zainab, Joanne Chong E-Qin, Khai Yang Ong, Shobhit Gulati, Cheong Tze Yan, Ryan, Wong Yen Theng, Ong Zhi Yong

Judges: Associate Professor Martin Buist (Vice Dean, Office of Undergraduate Programmes), Associate Professor Thomas Kong (Deputy Head, Department of Architecture), Representatives from James Dyson Foundation: Pin Da Tan (Robotics Research Engineer) and Sumit Patidar (Robotics Engineer), Space Faculty: Mr. Brennan Tan (Executive Engineer)

Speakers: Associate Professor James Kah (Assistant Dean (Outreach), Undergraduate Programmes), Sean Sabastian (Manager Robotics Research, Dyson)
