Musical Clock :

Reimagine Readymade

Designed by : Winnie Lim
Can readily-available objects be put together to compose a product?

Made up of existing items, Musical Clock allows one to set a time for music by pinning metal pin on the cork face. Once the conductive hour hand touches it, a soothing background music will sound gently for the user.

Getting started with the project, understanding how an alarm clock works before putting things together to compose one is of utmost importance before moving on to composition tryouts.

The 3rd variation was a proposal to change the way we set an alarm and this idea appealed to me. However, the unfolded paper clip did not hold itself well in this composition.

The next two variations made use of the prefabricated holes for screws to be fitted in, which limits the timings to be set.
Using a pin on a cork board was a breakthrough as it provides the same flexibility of setting an alarm using a conventional alarm clock. When the hour hand overlaps with the metal pin, the circuit is closed to cause the buzzer to sound.

However, there were several issues such as instability, bulky batteries, exposed wires and unappeal composition.

In this composition, the pins indicate the positions of numbers while holding two cork boards together. Book stand is used as a base and to conceal the clock movement.

However, the removal of metal pin while the buzzer sounds may impair the hour hand, and buzzing continuously for 10 minutes will be an annoyance.

Embracing the new-found challenge, motorised musical movement is used for a beautiful tune to play for a prolonged period.
