Internships and Student Exchange

Students in the Innovation & Design Programme may embark on internships to fulfil the compulsory internship requirement for their primary majors (if any) or for their own enrichment. They may also go for local and overseas student exchange programmes in Year 3.

Internship: Cohort AY2021/2022 onwards

Students in Engineering majors may choose one or a combination of the following options to fulfil the 10 units of compulsory internship requirement:

  • CFG2101 NUS Vacation Internship Programme (4 units)
  • CP3200 Internship (6 units) - for those in Computer Engineering only
  • CP3202 Internship II (6 units) - for those in Computer Engineering only
  • CP3880 Advanced Technology Attachment Programme (12 units) - for those in Computer Engineering only
  • CDE2605/EG2605 Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (4 units) or CDE2605R Undergraduate Research Experience (UREx) (4 units)
  • EG3612 Vacation Industrial Attachment (6 units)
  • EG3611A Industrial Attachment (10 units)

Poly-intake students are exempted from the internship requirement.

Students in Engineering majors who are planning to do two summer internships are recommended to clear the first one (CFG2101) between Year 1 and Year 2, and the second one (EG3612) between Year 2 and Year 3.

Students in Engineering majors who are planning to do a semester-long internship (EG3611A or CP3880) must do so only during Year 3 Semester 2. Similarly, students in non-Engineering majors who are required to complete a one-semester industrial attachment for their primary majors may only do so in Year 3 Semester 2. A semester-long internship cannot be done concurrently with the project courses CDE3301 and CDE4301/CDE4301A.

Internship: Cohorts AY2019/2020 and AY2020/2021

To fulfil their compulsory internship requirement, students in Engineering majors who are also enrolled in the Innovation & Design Programme may complete EG3612 Vacation Industrial Attachment (6 units) in lieu of EG3611A Industrial Attachment (10 units). The vacation internship should be completed during the summer break between Year 2 and Year 3, and the minimum duration must be 12 weeks.

Students in Engineering majors (except Engineering Science) may also opt to complete EG3611A Industrial Attachment (10 units) in lieu of EG3612 plus 4 units of Level 3000 technical electives in their Engineering major. Students can only take up the industrial attachment in Year 3 Semester 2 as they are not allowed to embark on credit-bearing internship concurrently with the project courses EG3301R and EG4301/EG4301A. Similarly, students in non-Engineering majors who are required to complete a one-semester industrial attachment for their primary majors may only do so in Year 3 Semester 2

Poly-intake students are exempted from the internship requirement. They may take other modules to satisfy the 6 units for EG3612.

Student Exchange Programmes

Students in the Innovation & Design Programme can only participate in a semester-long overseas student exchange programme (SEP) in Year 3 Semester 2. No project course is scheduled during this semester so as to allow students to go for industrial attachment or student exchange. Students should NOT go for exchange in Year 3 Semester 1 because they are required to complete the second half of the design project course CDEG3301 during this semester.

Students who are planning to go for SEP in Year 3 Semester 2 should clear their compulsory internship requirement via summer internships prior to the SEP semester.

Students on exchange programmes may opt to map relevant courses from partner universities to the Group C courses in the Innovation & Design Programme. However, the core courses in the Innovation & Design Programme namely the Group A course, Group B course, and CDE3301 Ideas to Proof-of-Concept must be completed in NUS and hence cannot be mapped by courses from partner universities.
