Projects
The Engineering Design and Innovation Centre engages in projects with various industry partners, in particular through student projects in the Innovation & Design Programme and MSc in Engineering Design & Innovation.
These hands-on projects span across a wide range of themes. Through these projects, students learn how to apply their design and technical domain knowledge and skills in order to solve problems that have real-world impact. The best projects are demonstrated to industry partners, guests, and students during our annual project showcase and other events.
Our student projects are partially supported by various industry donors and sponsors. We are grateful for their generous contribution which makes it possible for the Engineering Design & Innovation Centre to sustain and grow its educational mission.
Project Themes
Designing solutions for healthcare needs in hospitals and the community.
Designing future mobility solutions and novel vehicles for people and goods.
Designing smart devices to enhance everyday life, work, and play.
Designing solutions to tackle challenges of urbanisation and sustainability.
Developing novel applications for virtual reality and augmented reality.
Designing complex engineering systems and automations for various applications.
Design the next generations of nanosatellites as well as work on projects for international space competitions such as the University Rover Challenge and the CanSat Competition.
Bumblebee is a student-run, multi-disciplinary robotics team. The Bumblebee team designs and builds Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) to navigate across oceans independently, from the shore line and the water surface, to deep waters.
The Galassia programme is a student-led CubeSat nanosatellite initiative that focuses on developing solutions for space-related applications, and provides students with hands-on experience in space systems engineering, structural design, and mission operations.
NUS Calibur Robotics is a student-run team comprising members hailing different academic disciplines, working together to develop multiple robots to compete in the DJI RoboMaster University Championships – the ultimate robot death match.
The CanSat Competition is a design-build-fly competition that provides teams with an opportunity to experience the design lifecycle of an aerospace system. It is designed to reflect a typical aerospace programme on a small scale and includes all aspects of an aerospace programme from the preliminary design review to post flight review.
Students in this project design, manufacture, and build a formula style electric race car to compete in the annual intercollegiate FSAE competition in Michigan.
The NUS Mars Rover Team is a multidisciplinary student team competing in the University Rover Challenge to build the next generation of autonomous planetary exploration systems.
Project Showcase
This event featured projects from our final year undergraduate students in the Innovation & Design Programme and fourth cohort of students in the Master of Science in Engineering Design & Innovation programme who completed their year-long innovation projects at the end of AY2025/2026 Semester 2. Over 60 projects were showcased at the event, covering a wide range of themes such as healthcare, sustainability, smart solutions, robotics, immersive reality and others. This event featured projects from our Year 3 students in the Innovation & Design Programme who completed their year-long design project course CDE3301 Ideas to Proof-of-Concept, and students from the MSc Engineering Design & Innovation programme who were enrolled in the CDE5312 Beyond the Surface: Exploring Interactive Wearables course. The EDIC Project Showcase in April 2025 featured the work of our final year undergraduate students in the Innovation & Design Programme and third cohort of students in the Master of Science in Engineering Design & Innovation programme. There was over 40 projects featured during the showcase, covering a wide range of themes such as healthcare, sustainability, smart solutions, robotics, immersive reality and others. The EDIC Project Showcase 2024 featured the work of our Year 3 students in Innovation & Design Programme and second cohort of students in the Master of Science in Engineering Design & Innovation programme who completed their year-long design projects at the end of the August 2024 semester. The iDP Project Showcase 2024 highlights the work by our final year students in the Innovation & Design Programme. There were close to 40 projects from about 100 students, spanning a wide range of themes such as healthcare, mobility, sustainability, smart living, intelligent systems, and immersive reality.
The EDIC Project Showcase 2023 featured the work of our Year 3 students in Innovation & Design Programme and inaugural batch of students in the Master of Science in Engineering Design & Innovation programme who completed their year-long design projects at the end of the August 2023 semester.
The iDP Project Showcase 2023 highlights the work by this year's graduating students in the Innovation & Design Programme. Some of our students who were pursuing commercialisation of their project ideas through our Ideas to Start-up final year project course also pitched their start-up ideas during the showcase.
