Minor in Innovation & Design

The Minor in Innovation & Design offers students in the Innovation & Design Programme a teaser on basic concepts, methods, and skills that are useful for developing new products, services, and experiences that are of value to stakeholders in real-world problems. It comprises two preparatory courses about user-centred design and value creation in innovation, and culminates in a year-long design project course where students are expected to apply their design knowledge and skills and work together their peers from different disciplines to develop solutions to real problems.

Student who complete this Minor will acquire the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Application of Design Thinking tools and techniques to define user needs, identify opportunities for innovation, and generate ideas to meet these needs and opportunities.
  • Understanding of the interplay between desirable design, feasible technology, and sustainable enterprise in creating innovative products and services.
  • Application of a systematic design process to transform ideas for products and services into functional proof-of-concept prototypes.

The requirements of the Minor in Innovation & Design are as follows:

Courses Remarks
Group A – complete ONE of the following:

    • CDE2300/EG2201A User-Centred Collaborative Design (4 units)
    • CDE2310/EG2310 Fundamentals of Systems Design (4 units)
Default is CDE2300. Students from College of Design and Engineering and College of Humanities & Sciences should pass the introductory course DTK1234 Design Thinking prior to taking CDE2300.

CDE2310/EG2310 is targeted at students who intend to work on projects in complex engineering systems.

These courses can be double-counted toward the cross-disciplinary course requirement for students from School of Computing in Cohort AY2022/2023 onward. For students from other Faculties/Schools and cohorts, these courses are counted as unrestricted electives.

These courses should be completed during Year 1 or Year 2.

Group B – complete ONE of the following:

    • CDE2301/EG2301 Value Creation in Innovation (4 units)
    • CDE2311/EG2311 Introduction to Space Systems (4 units)
    • CDE2606B/EG2606B Independent Work (4 units)
Default is CDE2301.

CDE2311 is targeted at students who intend to work on satellite-related projects.

CDE2606B is reserved for students in special competition projects only.

Counted as unrestricted elective.

These courses should be completed during Year 1 or Year 2.

CDE3301/EG3301R Ideas to Proof-of-Concept (12 units) Generally counted as unrestricted elective.

This course replaces the design project course in Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Science.

This two-semester course must be completed during one of the following windows:

  • Year 2 Semester 2 to Year 3 Semester 1
  • Year 3 Semester 2 to Year 4 Semester 1

CDE3301 cannot be read concurrently with credit-bearing internship.

Students are encouraged to complete the Minor by end of Year 3 Semester 1 so that those who desire to upgrade to the Second Major in Innovation & Design may do so by the end of the same semester and have sufficient runway to complete the Second Major in their subsequent semesters.
