Mr Eddy Teo, Senior Engineering Manager for Hair Care at Dyson Singapore, presented an exciting webinar on 26 August 2021 (Thursday) evening about how the company has reimagined design engineering. Using the latest Dyson Supersonic attachment, the Flyaway, as a case study, Mr Teo walked through how Dyson identifies problems to explore and generate the unique products the world has come to know them for.
The Flyaway tool harnesses the Coanda effect, which describes the way that a stream of water or air sticks to a flat or a curved surface, to help style a person’s hair. It is a semi-circular loop tool that attracts longer hairs to the front, while a second jet of air pushes flyaway hairs away and underneath. It essentially mimics what stylists do in a salon to smoothen hair.
During his talk, Mr Teo also emphasized that it is through the meticulous application and iteration of the research and development process that Dyson is able to offer the unique products that its customers have grown to love worldwide.
The Innovation & Design Programme thanks Mr Teo and the James Dyson Foundation for presenting this webinar.
