EDIC Project Showcase 2023
The EDIC Project Showcase 2023 featured the work of our Year 3 students in Innovation & Design Programme and inaugural batch of students in the Master of Science in Engineering Design & Innovation programme who completed their year-long design projects at the end of the August 2023 semester. Find out more about their projects that were presented to members of the NUS community, industry partners, and the public during the event.
Innovation & Design Programme
Projects from EG3301R Ideas to Proof-of-Concept
Innovating for Better Healthcare
Pre-crawler device for infants
We provide parents of infants with neuromuscular disorders with an intuitive, effective and convenient pre-crawler device, which aids in the necessary reinforcement and induction of muscle memory through reciprocal and repetitive limb movements.
Universal miniscrew guide
To address visualisation and placement challenges when orthodontists insert temporary anchorage devices (TADs) in patients' jaws due to restrictive insertion sites, we developed a radio-opaque TAD guide for swift, precise positioning and securement of the insertion site location and angle.
ZenHealth: Enhancing mental resilience through habit cultivation
This project aims to promote and cultivate a more mentally resilient student population by lowering the friction to the adoption of research-backed methods, through a blend of physical sensory experiences provided by the ZenBox, and holistic digital approach from the ZenApp.
Innovating for Future Mobility
Innovating for Smarter Living
EcoAir: IoT-enabled energy consumption monitoring in warehouses
For those managing large, cooled spaces who want higher efficiency, EcoAir provides an easy-to-install, retrofitted solution which can reduce the energy consumption of your cooling system while being significantly cheaper than hardware upgrades.
Go deep in green with Bang & Olufsen
This project aims to revolutionize the consumer electronics industry, specifically Bang & Olufsen, by designing both a sustainable packaging and an eco-friendly battery source, ensuring a greener and more environmentally responsible future for tech products.
Innovating for Sustainable Cities
The Moving Farm: container mobile farming system
In this project, we designed a container farming system to provide farmers and cities with a seamless container urban farm system to maximise crop yield, which is easy to operate and can be integrated into any standard 20ft recycled shipping containers.
Innovating with Immersive Reality
D-Spark: patient communication training for dentistry students
This project aims to enhance dentistry students' dentist-patient communication ability by developing a readily accessible software that provides risk-free environment for interactions with diverse geriatric patient archetypes, addressing the limitations of current standardised patient programmes.
Multiplayer VR for collaborative training in Code Blue
The project aims to bridge the communication and workflow coordination gap among nurses while they are attending to emergency situations such as resuscitating a patient, through a VR simulation that serves as a platform for nursing students to practice these skills.
Special Competition Projects
NUS Formula SAE: R24e
In NUS Formula SAE, we design and fabricate a formula-style single seater car to take part in FSAE Michigan, one of the toughest inter-varsity competitions where we compete against some of the best universities around the world in both static engineering judging and dynamic time trials.
Master of Science in Engineering Design & Innovation
Projects from EG5303 Major Design Project
BubbleTeach
This project is committed to offering systematic leadership training for primary school students aged 6 to 12. It integrates online interactive courses, games, and practical activities to cultivate children's communication skills, problem-solving abilities, team collaboration, peer support, and adaptability.
CatReady
This project revolves around creating an innovative and interactive educational platform tailored for novice cat owners. Its central objective is to address the common challenges and apprehensions faced by individuals new to cat ownership by offering a gamified application that simplifies cat care complexities into an enjoyable and educational experience. Through in-depth research and user-focused methodologies, the project aims to bridge the knowledge gap, providing fundamental and comprehensive cat care guidance.
EmoConnect
EmoConnect is a playful and systematic gamified therapy toolkit.
It aims to help people better identify, express and control their emotions, and improve their emotional management ability.
EV Futures
At EV Futures, we delve into Singapore's plans for electric vehicles and summarize the upcoming changes. We also examine the current management of electric vehicle charging station cables and components, and outline what a city that is ready for EVs looks like. By considering various near future scenarios, we offer suggestions on how to turn all of this into actionable steps that can be taken today.
Go4Eat
Go4Eat is a product to reduce food waste from fridges. It has the following features: (1) a timer which can be set via a touch function, (2) reminders using light and vibration, and (3) a mobile application that provides smart notifications and recommended recipes.
LeGro
LeGro offers a modular, rapid-assembly indoor vertical farming solution that delivers fresher, healthier vegetables to urban consumers, complete with a precision crop yield calculator app to minimise food waste. Our system champions sustainability with planters made from eco-friendly materials, promoting a circular economy.
Lighting Optimisation: improving effects of light on sleep
The project aims to optimise sleep quality through smart lighting to reduce mobile phone use and blue light exposure before bed. Studies have shown that mobile phone use later in the evening can reduce sleep quality. This solution helps users sleep earlier by personalising lighting settings and phone restrictions. The project uses an Arduino Uno as the core controller, combined with LED strips for dynamic effects, colour transitions, and pressure sensors to add interactivity and responsiveness. This solves sleep problems due to mobile phone use and blue light exposure later in the evening and opens up new approaches in the smart lighting market.
OODB
OODB is an innovative mobile application designed to ease the transition for newcomers to Singapore, be they travellers, students, or professionals. The project aims to address common challenges individuals face when they arrive in a new country, offering a suite of services tailored to their immediate needs.
Streamlined tray return stations for efficient sorting
For the cleaners at school canteens who are overwhelmed with managing tray returns, especially during peak periods, our solution offers a streamlined system to easily clear returned trays by facilitating effective sorting of utensils, waste and crockeries. Our goal is to alleviate the congestion bottleneck.
