AbdoMentor: abdominal examination trainer

Abdominal examination plays a key role in patient diagnosis and is an essential part of every clinical encounter between a patient and a physician. However, we found that 9 in 10 medical students lack the confidence to perform abdominal examination independently. This is due to lack of exposure to real patients with abnormalities for medical students to practise their abdominal examination skills such as palpation and visual inspection. Moreover, the current use of standardised patients – who are healthy individuals who do not exhibit abnormalities – in place of real patients comprises the realism of the training. Therefore, in this project we designed a realistic abdominal examination trainer to enhance medical students’ palpation skills in picking up abnormal liver consistencies and enlargements, thereby increasing their confidence in conducting abdominal examinations.
